Manifest Destiny and the Westward Movement
Unit Overview:

How fair was Manifest Destiny?

After President Thomas Jefferson arranged to have the United States buy the Louisiana Purchase, a huge possibility opened up for exploration and opportunities. Many believed that it was our right to settle the land to the west. This policy became known as Manifest Destiny. Land, gold, commerce, and opportunities called to many adventurous settlers. For those willing to make the trek, the journey, although difficult, could end with magnificent rewards. However, the risks were great and could also end in death. Who made this journey West? When and how were different parts of the United States settled? What about the Native people who already lived on the land the settlers wanted for their own? Think about the following questions to get you started on your quest to understand how the United States was formed. By then end of this unit you will know the answer to the follwing questions and more.

1. How and when were parts of the United States settled?
2  Who were the diverse people who settled the United States?
3. How were Native Americans relocated and treated?
4. How did the policy of Manifest Destiny influence government policy?
