Expectations for Fifth and Sixth Grade Literature and Social Studies
Teacher expectations:

1. Treat everyone respectfully and fairly. 2. Teach the students! (I will do my best to help each student learn.)
3. Provide feedback. (I will try to return papers and tests in a timely manner.) 4. Make learning fun and informative.
Student behavior and participation expectations
Both language arts and social studies require active participation from students.  Students are expected to work in pairs and groups on projects and in-class assignments.  Students will be taught and expected to interact with courtesy and respect toward others. Misbehavior, including excessive talking or abuse toward the teacher or other students, will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the class, and therefore the learning process, may be asked to leave class until they can return without interference.
Grading:
literature and social studies
quizzes and tests = 30%
projects and writing assignments= 30%
homework = 20%
topics of the week = 10%
reading comprehension tests = 10%
Homework:
Students will typically have 45 minutes of homework in literature and social studies five days a week. This includes at least 20 pages of reading a night.  This homework represents time outside class for students to practice skills, process topics discussed in class, read, write, and create projects.  Students are expected to turn their homework in on time.
Late homework policy:
Homework is a time for practice and a chance for me to receive feedback on the student's progress.  It is also an important way for students to develop good study skills. Therefore it is important and should be completed on time. Partial credit will be given for late assignments completed within one week of the due date.
Late writing assignments and projects:
For every day a writing assignment or project is late the grade for that assignment will drop by grade. After one week, late assignments will result in a zero.
Absences:
If a student is absent it is his or her responsibility to find out what was missed. Homework will  be recorded on the class web site at www.geocities.com/cindercot.  If more information is needed, students should call a friend and ask.   When the child returns to school he or she should ask for any handouts and arrange to make up missed quizzes or tests.
Parent communication:
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The best way to get in touch with me quickly is through email at [email protected]. I will try to return all messages promptly.
