To what extent did the Civil War create a more perfect union?

The election of 1860 took place and President Abraham Lincoln inherited a country torn apart by the issue of state's rights and slavery. The more industrial North relied on factories, immigrants, and railroads to support its economic system. The South relied on cotton and huge plantations supported by slave labor to support its economic system. Would President Lincoln and the Union Army be able to preserve the United States or would Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy suceede and form their own country?  Start thinking about the questions below and by then end of the unit you will know the answers to the questions below plus many more.

1. What were the events leading up to the Civil War?
2. What was slavery and what was the typical life of a slave?
3. What was the Undergroud Railroad and who tried to help end slavery?
4. What are the differences between the North and the South?
