| The Civil Rights Movement | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Unit Overview: Was the Civil Rights Movement a success? World War II was over. The enemy had been defeated, the world was safe for democracy and U.S. soldiers returned home to begin life once again. Everyone was happy or were they? African Americans who had willingly contributed to the war effort began to question how our country could help the people of the world overthrow fascism while here at home many of them lived in segregated and unequal communities with little hope of escape. How did African Americans and others begin to fight for their rights? Think about the following questions to get your brain going for this unit: 1. What was life like for African Americans prior to the Civil Rights Movement? 2. Who are some of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement? 3. How did leaders like Dr. King and Malcolm X influence the movement? 4. What other groups have fought for civil rights? 5. Does diversity strengthen or weaken the United States? |
