My adventures this year began over spring break with a trip to Utah. Here I am overlooking Bryce National Park. The park is beautiful, and it was a surprise to find snow still covering the ground and the formations. I was able to hike down into the canyon and explore this unique area that makes up part of the Colorado Plateau.
While on spring break, I traveled to Zion National Park, which is also located in Southern Utah. In this picture, I am climbing to the top of Angel's Landing a strenous hike that goes from the valley below to a small pinacle over 5,788 feet high. The waterfall to my left in the picture is over 300 feet tall and you can see that I am much higher than it is. This hike was pretty scary because much of the time I was hiking over exposed rock and on the sides of mountains. The view at the end was a wonderful reward.
My summer began with two weeks of Great Hikes for the All Saints' summer school. We visited many fun spots in Arizona such as West Fork, Cathedral Rock and Tonto Natural Bridge. This picture is taken on the Weir Trail at Wet Beaver Creek. We had a fun afternoon here splashing in the water and building a great dam. This class was a great start to my summer.
Yes, I really did take this picture. This is the view from the top of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. I was at the top of the 13,792 mountain right at sunset. This evening adventure included getting to see a bianary star system, two nebulas, a galaxy, Jupiter and her moons, and our own moon. During my stay in Hawaii, I also traveled to the volcano once more and enjoyed a solitary evening watching the lava poor into the ocean. Of course, I snorkeled and said hi to the green sea turtles, too!
I ended my summer in Sedona. Here I am walking with my parents' dog, Gonzo. If you look carefully, you can see that we are playfully fighting over his leash as we walk down Oak Creek stream. The water was cool and Gonzo and my own dogs Carma and Cinder enjoyed swimming and playing together. The time I spent in Sedona was the perfect way to end my summer.
