Its little-branched rootstock produces large orbicular or oblong orbicular entire leaves float on the surface of the water. They are dark green on top and mostly purplish underneath. The fragrant, large, many petaled white flowers bloom above the water for three days opening in the forenoon each day. Flowering time is from June to September. PROPERTIES AND USES Antiseptic, Astringent, Demulcent. Tea made from white pond lily root makes a good gargle for irritation and inflammation in the mouth and throat. It can be used as an eyewash and an antiseptic vaginal douche. As a lotion, it helps to heal sores and to make the skin soft and smooth.
