calendula officinalis Marigold ![]() AKA pot marigold garden marigold The first type of marigold recognized is the Pot Marigold which is the Calendula, referring to calendula officinalis. Pretty much anything in the latin name that says "officinalis" was used medicinally at one time either topically or orally etc. Most of the other marigolds are varieties made for ornamentals and are hybrids. Ancient Romans gave the plant its name. Annual, but mine grew for three years before I had to move and leave them behind. For all I know they may very well be blooming yet. Pick the flowers at full peak of opening and dried them on a old screen door I not-so-prettily sewed the rip up. It likes full sun and average well drained soil (though my garden was unfortuantly in the middle of an old road bed) For awhile they were looking for a remedy for cancer in the Calendula, I don't know if they are still looking in this direction. There is a whole range of problems that the marigold was used for. But I am not comfortable to tell people how to use it internally. I have only used it topically. It is a great cream for; diaper rash, cuts and scrapes there is a LOT of it in my herbal salve I make (and posted the receipe here once I think), which works better than neosporin with no petroleum based products in it. For easy ointment crush the flowers in a bit of olive oil. I use them for dyeing wool as I am a handsheerer, spinner and beginning weaver.
