Vitamin A and Pregnancy Vitamin A is necessary for vision and promotes normal growth and differentiation of cells in the body. Vitamin A is fat soluble, and is found in liver, eggs, and cod liver oil. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body and high levels may accumulate over time. The RDA for women and men is 2,300 and 3,000 IU per day, respectively. In general, people should avoid doses in excess of 10,000 IU per day. Some studies have concluded that vitamin A in amounts greater than 10,000 IU may produce birth defects. Pregnant women taking cod liver oil (which contains vitamin A) must use caution to ensure that they are not consuming excessive amounts. In general, pregnant women should obtain vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene found in fruits and vegetables. Source(s) Draconian Special Thanks Family and Friends Back - Home - Next |
