Chapter 27: Touched by an Angel

Notes: From Adam’s point of view.

A long silence had settled over the room. Adam was sure he wasn’t the only one feeling awkward with the whole situation. Charlie had tried his best to make Guy calm down, but hadn’t succeeded the slightest. Coach Bombay had told them to stay at the rooms, and if he heard about Connie, he’d tell them. Guy hadn’t accepted that idea at all.

They stayed at a motel close to the rink, four players in each room. Although no one ever followed those rules anyway, there were always at least six people in a room at all time.

Adam heard Charlie sigh from the other side of the room. Then he heard Luis move around on his bed. Dwayne yawned, causing Adam to yawn too. The thought went through his head; why did a person get the urge to yawn just because he saw someone else yawn? No one else seemed to get infected by it, maybe it was just he.

More silence. They were three more persons in the room, not living there, but being there anyway. Guy had already left the room, saying something about convincing Fred to brake into the hospital. His argument had been that if they could get into prison, they should be able to get into a hospital.

Adam held his breath for a moment, trying to hold back a sigh from entering over his lips.

Cecilia was snuggled up among the pillows in his bed, next to him. He was actually quite annoyed with her, but he’d decided to put that aside for a while until Connie was better. Cecilia always stayed in his bed when they were watching movies, so he imagined that the TV was turned on, and suddenly he wasn’t so annoyed with her more.

“Okay, we’re acting like it’s a funeral,” Jesse complained and got up from the floor. “No one’s dead, remember.”

Adam felt Cecilia move closer to him, and he exhaled violently. “I feel a bit weary,” he muttered, putting his arm around Cecilia’s shoulders. “Besides, anyone feeling good for the moment?”

“Nah,” Charlie mumbled, staring into the ceiling. “I feel like a zamboni just ran over me.”

“There always have to be a hockey-metaphor for everything, ain't it?” Adam said with a smile.

Charlie glared at him for a second, then he took a bite of his sandwich and continued staring into the ceiling. “A hockey-metaphor is better then no metaphor at all, right? At least I don’t obsess about it.”

Both Adam and Cecilia laughed out loud. “Yeah, like you’re not obsessed about hockey,” Jesse rolled his eyes. “You were yelling at us during the whole game today. When I think about it, you yelled a lot back in elementary school too, especially when we were playing on the pond. Remember?”

“Pfff,” Charlie snorted and sat up. “I was just trying to be a leader. Don’t take it out on me just because you couldn’t play.”

“Uhm, Charlie, you couldn’t play either.”

“Yeah, didn’t they call you Spazway?” Cecilia asked with a smirk. “Even I know how to skate, so how hard can it be?”

Charlie stared at them. “Okay, look, Cecilia. You’re way too young to be awake at this time, go to sleep. Jesse, shut up. Adam, shut up. Everyone else, be quiet. Got it?”

“Speaking like a true leader,” Jesse yawned. “Where are the rest of the guys?”

Charlie shrugged. “I dunno. Out?”

Adam put his head down on the pillow, shoved at Cecilia to get some more room, and then he closed his eyes. Coach Bombay was so going to strangle them when he found out that Guy was missing. Adam decided that it was best to sleep before your own execution.

“He’s not back!”

Adam flew up from bed, blinked away the sunlight in his eyes and tried to wake up properly. He looked at Charlie with one eye. “What?”

“Guy is missing, he’s not back! I thought he was exaggerating when he said that he was leaving,” Charlie ranted. “Now he’s gone, and he could be anywhere. Get up! Help me find him.”

Adam sighed and was just lying down on the bed again when someone knocked on the door. “Oh my God, it’s Coach Bombay,” Charlie whimpered. “He’s killing me. Oh my God!”

“What?”

“He’s gonna give my C to Cecilia or Travis, I just know it! Oh Jesus God!”

Luis threw his pillow at Charlie. “Could you shut up? We’re trying to sleep.”

“Get up!” Charlie bellowed and walked to the door. “Yes?”

It wasn’t Coach Bombay on a mission; it was Averman. “He’s on his way,” he said. “Looking angry; just thought I should tell you, Charlie.”

Charlie began whimpering again and sat down on Adam’s bed. Then he twitched when he saw Cecilia. “What’s she doing here? She’s not allowed in this room, according to the rules. Adam?”

“Sleeping, I’d say,” Adam answered. “You told her to go to sleep, and she fell asleep. She’s following your orders.”

“I meant sleep in her own room, not sleep on your bed, getting me into trouble,” Charlie whined. “Get her out of here, before Bombay shows up. Damnit, damnit, damnit!” Charlie shoved at Cecilia to get her to wake up.

“I’m up!”

“Good, now get out,” Charlie demanded, pointing at the door. “What’s your room-number?”

Cecilia shrugged and sat up. “I don’t know. Ten?”

Charlie gazed at Jesse and Goldberg. “You’re out of here too, back to your rooms. Now,” Charlie muttered and threw the pillow back at Luis. “And you two, get up. Also now.”

“What’s your problem? Guy is probably at the hospital, not missing at all. Have you called him, or checked with the hospital?” Cecilia asked and climbed down from bed. “I’m leaving, but just because I don’t want to run into Bombay. Bye Charlie.”

“Yeah, bye,” Charlie grimaced. The door slammed shut behind her, but Charlie was already occupied with other things. “What do I do know? I like being the captain; I want to have that on my college recommendation later on. Oh my God, I’m not getting into college, am I? I’m stuck in high-school for life!”

Adam put the pillow over his head instead, to drown out the complaints.

Notes: From Guy’s point of view.

One of the nurses at the desk called for him again. “Mr. Germaine? There’s another call for you.”

Guy chewed on his lip for a second. “Who is it?”

The nurse gave him a tired look and sighed. “It’s not my job to answer calls. I’m personally going to answer your call, because I’m tired having people phone here, asking for you.”

“Fine, I’ll answer,” Guy said and went over to the desk. “Ever heard of compassion?” The nurse gave him a dirty look, and went back to her job.

“Guy?”

“Yeah? Who is it?”

“It’s me! Charlie, for God’s sake! Where the hell are you?”

Guy rolled his eyes. “Nice to hear from you Charlie. I told you where I was going.”

“Don’t you ever disappear like that again, got it? I had to tell Bombay that you were out getting food for the rest of us. When he realizes that we’re still starving after three hours, he’ll be suspicious.”

“Yeah, especially since I’ve already called to tell him where I am. What’s wrong with you, and why did you call here five times?”

“Because you never answered!” Charlie shouted. “Would it kill you to answer the phone once in a while? I sound like my mother, don’t I?”

“Yeah, you do. Bye Charlie.” Guy hung up the phone, even though he heard Charlie object on the other line.

“Should I be expecting more calls, Mr. Germaine?” the nurse asked him.

“You know, you should really work on your social skills. I know teachers with more compassion,” Guy muttered and went the other way. He almost ran into Fred halfway. “What are you doing here?”

“Convincing you to come back with me. Charlie yelled at me, he got some idea into his head that I followed you to the hospital last night. Why would you drag me into all this?”

“I had to blame someone!” Guy explained. “I would’ve blamed your girlfriend, but she was with Adam last night. So why not you? I don’t care if you get in trouble, I don’t even care if I get into trouble! Get lost!”

“You know, Connie’s alright,” Fred said. “She woke up like an hour ago, while you were hiding here. I don’t care if you blame me so I’ll get into trouble, but could you please tell me when I’m supposed to be yelled at?”

“She’s awake? Why haven’t anyone told me?”

“Everyone knows that, if you’d stayed at the motel, you would’ve known that too by now. She’s in room 12; you better go before Bombay gets here. It’s down the stairs, to the right and in the hallway. You owe me a big favor.”

“Like hell I do,” Guy growled. “You owe me hundredths of favors since spring break. I’m going to see my girlfriend now. Maybe you should go back to the rest of the team.”

“Maybe I should,” Fred mumbled.
