25: Mad About You
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Notes: From Julie’s point of view.
“You can’t do that!” Julie exclaimed. “Why can all of you change partner, while we can’t?”
Everyone in the project-group had gone completely mental after Fred and Sarah traded with each other. Charlie was the first to find out, and he couldn’t have objected louder.
First he’d begged Travis to take Cecilia, but he refused. So instead Charlie had threatened Adam to do it. Adam had finally agreed, after being forced to.
The only couple that hadn’t been ‘allowed’ to trade was Julie and Scott, and that made them both want to kill someone.
“Who made the rules?” Julie wanted to know. “It’s unfair!”
“Stop with the screaming,” Charlie said. “We can’t trade anymore, Ms. Adams would be suspicious. You know that.”
“She’s not even here!” Julie yelled. “I want to trade.”
Charlie shook his head. “Nope, I told the others to not let you. Being with Scott could be good for you. You know, to learn how to be modest and such. Stuff like that.”
“Modest?!” Julie shouted.
“Yeah, the opposite to how you’re behaving right now.”
Julie gave him a threatening gaze. “Look, when we get out of school, you’re the first one I’m eliminating. I know how to pull it off, I’m rich!”
She went by him and pushed the door open to the hallway. They were having a practice at the rink they were going to play the games at later. She heard someone follow her out.
“Nice exit,” Scott laughed and grabbed her shoulder. “You’re not mad because I told Coach Bombay where you were hiding during your little adventure at Millennium?”
“He never would’ve found out if you hadn’t told him,” Julie hissed. “Look, just keep out of my way until Monday. We’re officially NOT married anymore.”
“Divorce?”
“No, separation,” Julie clarified.
“Conway told me that you were thinking of getting Marcus’s place. I’m thinking of that too, you see.”
“Peachy. I already talked Goldberg out of it. What will it take for you to give it up?”
Scott shrugged. “I won’t let you win this one. So I guess it’s you versus me, right? This should be interesting.”
“This is not going to be a re-run of spring break, Scott.”
“Man, are you still going on about that? I stopped listening to you like six months ago. Where’s the off-button on you? I need to know,” Scott complained. “Maybe I can install one.”
Julie decided to not give a sassy comeback, so she went out on the ice instead. Scott skated off to one of the goals. Julie watched as he put his bottle of water on top of the goal. Then she decided to try and talk him out of his plans.
“Hey!” she shouted. “Scott, can’t you let me take his place, just this once?”
“Oh, so you’ve surrendered to begging, I see. Lemme know if it works.”
Julie decided to try another tactic instead. Why beg when it was obvious that it wouldn’t work? “How’s it going with that girlfriend of yours?”
“Explain to me how that would be in any kind of interest to you,” Scott said monotonously. “Because I can’t figure it out at all.”
“What’s her name again? Pepsi?”
“Patsy, Julie. Her name’s Patsy.”
“That’s what I said!” Julie lied. “Well, almost.”
“She’s fine, and it’s great to have a girlfriend that’s not completely out of her mind.”
Julie took a deep breath. This was going to be a hard task. “I was just concerned. She looks a bit... weary,” Julie explained. “Like she’s bored of her skulls.”
“I think you’re confusing her with yourself,” Scott replied.
That was the final straw. Julie lost her patience, along with her temper. “Why can’t you just dump that sorry excuse for a girl somewhere?” she asked.
“I would, but you hadn’t bounced back from there yet,” Scott answered with the same absence in his voice as earlier. “Was there anything more you wanted?”
Julie searched her brain for something clever to say. She couldn’t let him win just like that. Well, Scott usually got mad when she attacked his new girlfriend. Maybe she could do that? Nah, that was almost too low, even for her.
“Could you please get out of my face, Julie? You’re annoying and I won’t let you have your way anymore,” Scott said after a while.
Julie decided that sinking that low was something she could pull off with flying colors. “Why don’t you just break up with her? Is she too good in bed, huh?” she mocked. Scott just rolled her eyes. Maybe it wasn’t too smart start a fight you couldn’t win?
“Wouldn’t know, unlike you, I don’t sleep with everything and everyone I meet. I’m actually very relieved that I never slept with you. Who knows where the hell you’d been by then?” Scott shot back.
“Screw you, I was a virgin back then.”
“And you’re a natural blonde too, right?” Scott laughed.
“I am!” Julie exclaimed.
Well, they were getting nowhere with this name-calling. Maybe she should talk Charlie into letting her have the spot? Maybe he’d feel pity for her now when she wasn’t allowed to switch partner?
Yes, that was the new plan.
