13: The Magnificent Seven
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Notes: From Travis’s point of view.
While the rest of the team was still in bed sleeping, Travis dragged himself in to town. He had to be at a publisher’s office first thing when they opened, and that was pure torture when it was an early Sunday morning.
The whole First Line had met up yesterday to get Guy and Sarah out of the elevator. It wasn’t because it had been a difficult problem to solve; they had all gotten there because they all wanted to see if the rumor was really true. And Connie had tried to bribe them all to show up so she could have her revenge on Guy.
Travis had never worked with anything in marketing before; all he knew was that it involved advertising and such. It had to be better then being a lawyer anyway, because that had never been a dream of him. But neither had most of the assignments on this project been...
While working in front of the computer during the first couple of hours, he got the chance to send the others messages over the Internet. They had all taken a break from the project, so they were telling him about all the great things they had done during the morning. Most of them hadn’t got out of bed until eleven or something.
Nish had called him earlier on his cell and complained about Sarah’s manners. She’d been really angry since she got out of the elevator, and Nish was annoyed because Travis had gotten away from her for a couple of hours.
Nish could be so spoiled sometimes.
Travis had to meet up with Charlie and Cecilia during his lunch-hour, because they hadn’t finished the latest roster for the tournament later on that week. Coach Bombay and Muck usually had them doing assignments all week long when it came to the team. Travis couldn’t remember that being the assistant team-captain was supposed to work like a punishment.
“How’s the job going?” Cecilia asked when they finally had decided where to eat.
“I guess it’s going fine,” Travis answered. “It’s kind of boring, but it’s not difficult. When’s your field working?”
“She’s spending the day at the emergency room tomorrow. I have to go there with her, in case she passes out again,” Charlie rolled his eyes.
“That’s not why!” Cecilia objected. “Ms. Adams wants us to work together as a team.”
“And to ask that from a couple of team-captains? That’s just wrong,” Travis joked.
Cecilia and Charlie nodded. “I know!” they both exclaimed.
Sometimes Travis had the feeling that he was the one who kept the team together, even though it was mainly Charlie’s job. Maybe it was because Charlie had an actual life besides from the team, some thing that Travis wasn’t sure he had. Cecilia had her boyfriend to spend her free time with, and Charlie had other things on his mind then hockey. So Travis was the only one who could concentrate on the captains-assignment completely.
Or maybe he was just one of those people who were born to be a leader. Yeah, that must be it...
“So, what are we supposed to do this week? When is it ever time to start expelling people from the team? I’ve heard that it’s what captains do,” Cecilia said. “I’ve already made a list.”
“When did you have time for that? Between the house-hunting or the egg-cracking?” Charlie muttered.
“Don’t argue, I have to be back in thirty minutes,” Travis sighed. “Can’t you get along just for once?”
“Nope. That’s not us. Have you ever experienced a whole week without any arguing? I know I haven’t,” Cecilia went on. “And this week is definitely the worst one yet. Is anyone NOT arguing?”
“I’m not arguing with anyone,” Travis told her.
“That’s different. You NEVER argue with anyone. It’s extremely annoying,” Charlie muttered. “Can’t you just argue a little with someone? It would really make us all feel less like a bunch of goons.”
Cecilia banged her fork into the table. “Shut up now, I’m tired of this conversation.”
“I’m tired of you, but that doesn’t make much of a difference, does it?” Charlie replied. “And could you stop hitting things with your utensils? You’re not a baby now are you? No, wait, let me phrase that in a different way...”
Travis tuned them out when they began with the bickering again. It was amazing that he could keep the team together like he did. People had been elected President for less...
