Chapter 1: Friends
By: Cimmy
Story Notes: Fourth part
of the series The Story of the Mighty Ducks.
Summary: It’s
time for the annual science project, where you are supposed to team up with
each other and pretend that you are married. A few of the couples pretend they
are more close to the verge of a divorce, and the whole project gets out of
hand.
Rating:
PG-13.
Warning: I
have to list them as the come, since I can’t think of anything right now.
Timeline: Takes
place a few months after ‘Friendship’.
(Un) Important babbling-notes from
Cimmy: Yes, I’m writing my own interpretation of
this story, based on the science project from hell.
Disclaimer:
Disney owns The Mighty Ducks, Roy MacGregor owns the characters from the
Screech Owls-books, and I own my beloved Swedes.

Notes: From Cecilia’s point of view. Italic means thoughts.
Cecilia sighed, suddenly very aware of why
she should’ve stayed in
The chance of being paired with the right
person was minimal. Her first choice would of course be Fred. Next in line was
Travis, since he would definitely an ‘A’ home for her.
The person on the bottom of the list had to
be
“I’m killing myself. Right now.” It was
Goldberg’s complaining voice that brought her attention back to the lesson.
“I’m not spending these next weeks with some chick, just so I can get good
grades.”
“It’s usually the other way around. The
girls won’t come close to you, no matter how good your grades are,” Julie
giggled. “And maybe you don’t have to. Maybe you’ll get chosen to be in the
‘alternate lifestyle’ couple.”
“What’s that?” Goldberg asked suspiciously.
“The gay couple, of
course.”
“Ah, man, is that the only choice?”
“Yes,” Connie answered.
“Well, it’s better then spending time with some
high-maintenance girl anyway. Unless I get coupled with...”
“Me?” Julie replied sarcastically.
“If I’d get paired with you, I have to
really kill myself.”
“You’d get an A for sure,” Connie reminded
him.
“I’ll think about it,” Goldberg caved in.
It really didn’t matter anyway, since they
weren’t allowed to pick their own partner. So the chance was pretty big that
Goldberg wouldn’t get paired with Julie or any of the guys on the team.
“Are we supposed to consummate the marriage
too? Coz I’m all up for that,” Postman grinned.
“You pig,” Connie declared. Postman nodded
and pushed her off the chair. Connie objected loudly, but their teacher
interrupted them.
Everybody got to their seats and shut up.
Charlie was the last one to enter the classroom. He didn’t seem to be in a
great mood. He was probably mad at them for the last practice. They had been
really disorganized and Charlie had lost his temper. Cecilia hoped that he would
get over it before their next practice; they would probably face some major
punishment otherwise.
“Mr. Conway, late attendance I see. How
about taking a seat?” their teacher Ms. Adams suggested. “I know that you’re
all on the edge of your seats, wanting to know the pairing for the next couple
of weeks’ project. I have to disappoint you with this first.”
Everybody in the class started to moan when
Ms. Adams began handing out the results of this week’s quiz.
“Not happy with the result, Mr. Nishikawa?”
Ms. Adams asked.
Cecilia skimmed through her quiz. She’d
failed on three questions. It wasn’t that bad, was it? Hopefully it was better
then a ‘B’, she needed better grades if she wanted to raise her average grade
from ‘B’ to an ‘A’. That was probably not going to happen, but one could dream,
right?
“I hate school,” Fred muttered from the
seat behind her. “This is what I get after five hours of studying?”
“What did you get?” she asked curiously.
She had been helping him a lot with this subject lately.
“Just a D+. I missed five questions and
failed on three. This sucks.”
Fred seemed like he was ready to rip his
paper apart too, but Ms. Adams interfered before he had the chance to. “I want
to point out that this upcoming project makes out fifty percent of your final grade.
I better see some improvement from some of you.”
Ms. Adams went over to the blackboard and
took out a piece of paper. “I’ve separated you to your teams, so there won’t be
any collides with your schedules.
The football team started to cheer, and the
Ducks just looked very content. So, they didn’t have to share space with the
football team for the next few weeks? Great!
Ms. Adams had other things up her sleeve,
though. Since there were mostly guys in their group, they’d been teamed up with
the cheerleading squad, to the guys’ amusement.
“I hope they pair us with the Varsity ones,”
Portman smiled. “They are hot!”
“They don’t have science together,” Connie
pointed out.
“Who cares, they are still my main choice,”
Portman concluded. “Right, Guy?”
Guy just smiled, not wanting to give Connie
any ideas. Connie just glared at him and turned to face the teacher. Cecilia
smiled. Connie was probably going to be a nervous wreck if Guy got paired with
a cheerleader.
But, what if Fred got paired with a
cheerleader too?

Notes: From Charlie’s point of view.
Charlie refused to work with any of those
air-headed cheerleaders. They would only bring his grade down even more. He’d heard
Goldberg mumble something about ‘killing himself’; maybe that was a good
advice?
He gazed at Cecilia, who was giving Fred
directions about his latest quiz failure. Charlie held her responsible for
their latest practice. If she was going to be the co-captain, the least she
could do was to help run the team. Was that too much to ask for?
“These are the pairings,” Ms. Adams
announced.
She started of with the football team.
Lucky bastards, they got the junior cheerleaders, to Portman’s annoyance.
“Moving on to the hockey team...” Ms. Adams
seemed to be highly entertained by the look of their pain filled faces.
She started off by announcing the players
who had been teamed up with the cheerleaders.
“Don’t complain,” Sarah smiled. “You always
said that you were going to marry someone successful, right?”
“Bite me,”
The only ones left when Ms. Adams had
teamed the cheerleading-squad up was Cecilia, Fred, Scott, Travis, Adam,
Connie, Guy, Sarah, Julie and Charlie himself. The First Line, all of the
girls, and Scott. Wasn’t that just peachy?
“Why don’t they just sew us all together? I
mean, it’s like they put us all together by purpose,” Adam said.
“Actually, I thought I’d use you all for a
special project,” Ms. Adams explained.
“This isn’t special enough for you?”
Charlie growled. “Miss.”
The others smiled at him. Damn it, he
always forgot that he shouldn’t address his teachers like that. They weren’t as
indulgent as his coaches could be.
“I already know that you’re close friends,
so I thought it would be fun to pair you all up, as a part of a… Let’s just call
it a psychological experiment,” Ms. Adams smiled.
“Great, what’s fun for you is fun for us.” If
he kept on like this, he’d bench his ass in detention the next thing he did.
“Mr. Conway, do we have a problem with this
assignment?”
“No,” he said with a sigh. Better not make
Ms. Adams pissed too.
Ms. Adams gave them all her most serious
look.
“You’re close friends, and now’s your
chance to see how well you actually know each other, work together and get
along with each other. I bet you get along better with the one you least expect.”
“Can you just say who we got as a partner?”
Julie asked. “I can’t stand this anymore.”
Ms. Adams smiled again. She seemed to do
that a lot. She was probably just enjoying herself so much, tormenting them
all.
Charlie took a deep breath. Well, here went
nothing. Who would be his lawfully wedded wife for the next couple of weeks? “Dear
God, don’t let it be Connie.” He’d spent his entire childhood with that
girl. Two weeks with her would be two weeks filled with bicker. And while he
was on the subject, his main wish – apart from Connie – was to not be paired
with Cecilia either. He didn’t know Sarah very well, and Julie was annoying.
Hell, the following weeks would be torture no matter what girl he’d be paired
with.
Ms. Adams unfolded the paper with the list,
and then she cleared her throat.
Charlie sighed.
Goodbye freedom, hello marriage.
