Live your Life

Chapter 2: Life Throws You in the Weirdest Directions

Notes: From Adam’s point of view.

Adam could understand how his mood affected people the wrong way. It must be very annoying to see him being cheerful, while having tons of problems breathing down your neck. It was just a fake cover anyway; he wasn’t at all as happy as he might come off as.

There was no limit to how far his Dad could push things. That was the reason why he was now considering moving away from home for good. That was also the reason for why he didn’t want to attend college.

He hadn’t told anyone about this, his friends all thought he was going to Stanford, but he wasn’t. His Dad thought he was going to Harvard, like Andrew, but he wasn’t. Cecilia thought he was going to his first-choice college, Yale. He wasn’t.

Right now he was considering leaving everything behind and take Cecilia’s offer to follow her to New York. That was what he really wanted to do. Cecilia was his best friend, and being separated from her was not something he was going to accept silently.

The only problem was how to handle Fred’s reaction to this. Adam was used to be the intruder by now, and his interest in Cecilia was not of the kind that Fred should feel threatened by. It’d never been.

He was also pretty sure that Cecilia never would have asked him to tag along if she hadn’t been so irritated at Fred. She wanted to go to New York, so she could get out of her college plans, but Fred was refusing. That’s why she’d asked Adam if he wanted to go with her.

Fred was one of his best friends too. Maybe that was the tactic he should use to intrude this time. Because he had to intrude, that much was for sure. He would do anything to get out of his college-obligation. He was not spending his next four years all-alone without anyone he knew. That was out of the question.

“You know, I bet there’s a lot of cool apartments to rent for a decent price. Wouldn’t it be cool to live close by each other? We could hang out just like we always have!” Cecilia exclaimed.

Adam hadn’t told her about his plans to move to New York with her yet. He was going to do that when the time was right. Until then, she could make herself exhausted with trying to talk him into tagging along. Who was he to tell her that he’d already made his choice?

“I guess,” he said with the intention of sounding uninterested. Actually, he was pumped with the fact of moving to New York. But Cecilia didn’t have to know that, did she?

“I mean; you can probably get into NYU!” Cecilia continued. “Instead of Yale, you know. So I won’t be alone in New York, now when Fred has abandoned me.”

“Could you exaggerate more?” he asked. “You’re not abandoned.”

“I feel like it,” she pouted. “I’m all alone in the world.”

Just when she’d said that, Fred came running up to them. “Guess what!” he shouted. Everyone else at the Rainbow Café turned their heads to see what was going on.

“What?” Adam replied, while avoiding Cecilia’s sour face. If she didn’t want to talk to Fred, fine. Why did everyone else have to stop talking to him too?

“I got a great idea for what we should do for graduation,” Fred answered. “Look!”

“I don’t want to spoil your excitement, but graduation was two weeks ago,” Cecilia growled. “Need a calendar?”

“No, I think I need a new girlfriend,” Fred snapped. “If you don’t wanna know, maybe you should go and pack your bags. Oh, yeah, right, you’re not sure where you’re heading yet. Bummer.”

Cecilia threw a french-fry at him, and he ducked. Adam rolled his eyes. “What’s the plan?” he interrupted them.

“My Dad got these free tickets to a cruise. You’re interested?”

“Meaning; big boat, lot’s of water?”

“More like; lot’s of alcohol, huge parties,” Fred said. “At least the alcohol-part should be something for you, Cecilia.”

Adam took one of the tickets that Fred threw on the table. It sounded pretty good. A seven day-cruise on international water. Maybe that could clear everyone’s heads? He was about to accept the offer at once.

“Adam?”

“Yeah, I’m in. When are we leaving?”
