| War hero apprehended robber by Cecilie D. Haug Former SAS corporal Allen Walters apprehended the young robber of a sub-post office in Crownham Road, just minutes after the robbery took place. The young offender was trying to get away with �2000, armed with a rifle, when Mr Walters took him by the knees and tackled him to the ground. The youngster, his head covered in a scarf, had pointed a gun at the postmistress, Aileen Fellows,32, and demanded money from the till. �The youngster just ran in and said �give me the money�. I was absolutely terrified.�, she says. Mr Walters has been working as a security guard for five years, but was off duty at the time of the incident. He says: � I didn�t even notice the gun, I just tackled him, and held him down the five minutes it took the police to arrive at the scene. This is the third time this post office has been robbed, and Mrs Fellow is unsure if she will carry on with the post office now. �There were many elderly folk in the post office. They were all frightened. I was running after the youngster when Mr Walters came to the rescue. Someone must have phoned the police, because they came in matter of minutes. But it seemed as a lifetime for me.� This isn�t the first time corporal Walters has faced danger. He was in the SAS for seven years, and was involved in the Falkland war. His contribution has left him with a limp and a conduct medal for his participation. He has also been a member of the Fernham Lions, rugbyclub, which inspired his way of apprehending the offender. � He didn�t fight much back, and was fairly easy to restrain. He wasn�t so tough without his gun.�, Walters says. |
