Woman Friend

When I am asked
who is this woman to you
I smile

Is she your wife?
Is she your lover?
Is she your friend?

Again I smile
I watch as they sit in wonder
Of my answer.
My eyes sparkle
For I know the certainty of my answer
As my chest rises with pride
And my heart quickens its beat.

I tell them
Yes, she is my wife
Married to my spirit
I tell them
Yes, she is my lover,
Lover to my soul
I tell them
Yes, she is my friend
Friend to my heart.

Then I chuckle to myself
As I see bewilderment
Swimming in their thoughts
I must set their confusion free.

I tell them
The words I do will never be spoken
I tell them
The physical touch of lovers
Will never be felt
I tell them
That the loss of friendship
Through distance and circumstances
Will never be shared.

I tell them our spirits have
Woven with each other
And we are all they have asked
Within our spirits.

But they will never comprehend
For you are more
You are woman
You are my friend.
