"A courtyard window
This tree stands, remembering
each rooted here."

What is sacred?

A church or mosque with walls that hold space for us
to be still in our moments of thanksgiving and supplication?
A face or body of a loved one
that brings joy to our hearts simply at their appearance in our moments?
A vision of the Mother holding our brothers and sisters
nurturing them 'til their death?
The land that gives crops to feed a family,
a crop deemed deadly to those who consume it?
A country that expels a monk
because he teaches a philosophy of peace?
The ruins of our ancestors telling stories of their journey
here in the space in which we walk?
Hunger that kills our children
when the rains don't pour to bring the maize to us?
The kiss of a child, gaze of a lover,
embrace from a friend?
The rivers that run our souls to the oceans
to evaporate to the spirit world?
The loss of the life path we have walked with security?

Sacredall sacred and of One

The winds of time~~sacred in their kiss
Sends each of these gifts
Of living
And death

Our Prayer, giver of life and death,
Is that we understand the sacredness
Of each of your gifts to us
