EMPOWERS, LIGHT INSPIRES

“Let there be
light!”
This was exactly
what happened in Barangay Talalang, Balbalan, Kalinga after a
micro-hydro-electric power plant became operational.
The Ps. 187,000.00 power plant, co-funded by CIDSS, the local
government unit and the townsfolk, now provides electricity to power
a water and irrigation system for 106 families.
Before the arrival
of CIDSS in 1996, the Banao indigenous community of Kalinga had no
alternative means of livelihood from farming.
After tilling their farms until 4:00 pm, members of the three
sitios in the barangay idle their time away.
Many members of the
community are skilled in blacksmith and pottery. However, these
skills are not maximized for income generating.
Now, with
electricity that cost as low as P10.00 a month, members of the
community can now engage in more productive endeavors after dark.
“Before we used
to produce only one ‘itak’ (machete) but now we can make as much
as ten pieces,” enthused Edwin Paganoa, a community member.
The improved
irrigation system enhanced the community’s crop out put of corn,
sugar cane, coffee and bananas.
According to Edna
Padio, CIDSS Worker in the area, income jumped to as high as 100%
due to the micro-hydro power plant.
Families, whose estimated income of Ps. 3,000.00 per month,
were able to augment their income with an additional Ps 2,000.00 to
3,000.00.
Even members of the
rebel camp operating in the area, supported the illumination of the
barangay.
The power supply
really did wonders for the people in Banao.
