Chickens

We have 25 new chicks this spring (2000) -- so far! Pictures coming soon. There are: Production Reds (2), Black Australorps (2), Auracaunas (3), Barred Rocks (4), a White Leghorn, Buff Orpingtons (4), a Golden Sex-Link, Delawares (3), Silver-laced Wyandottes (2), and Golden-Laced Wyandottes (3).

Here are most of our "girls" -- 13 biddies, all expert egg-layers. They are also expert food-finders, as any good chicken is. This was taken in December of 1999.

There are: 4 auracanas (the so-called "easter-egg chicken" because they often lay green/teal eggs), 4 black australorps, 2 Rhode Island reds, 2 white leghorns, and 1 lonely silver wyandotte

In late summer (1999), another stray dog got a hold of one of the white leghorns and managed to get a mouthful of her tail feathers, but there were only a few scratches on the the bird herself. We chased the dog off just in time, for surely she would have been dead shortly. We put some antibiotic on the scrapes, and she recovered fully. However, she looked funny with all those tail feathers missing (which have since grown back), so her name is Stubby.
