THE CIBILICH FAMILY TREE

THE CIBILICH / CIBILIC / ZIBILICH FAMILY from the fishing village of Duba near Trpanj on the Peljesac Peninsula in Croatia can trace it's history back some 500 years . I will attempt to show the genealogy of our ancestors and relations .

This page was started in August 2000 by JOHN V. CIBILICH and is a continuation of the work first started by STIPO L. CIBILIC who wrote a manuscript on the History of Duba in 1973. This work was translated and continued by my late uncle (WALLY) VLAHO D. CIBILIC who spent many years doing further research and who kindly gave me his notes .

Along with our oral history and tradition passed down over the generarations all this research is based on census information dating back to 1664 and the genealogical research works of NENAD VEKARIC and historian MILOS VUJNOVICH along with contributions from many other people.

I have endeavoured to be as accurate as possible. I accept no responsibility for any errors but would appreciate any comments , updates or corrections you may have . Please feel free to email me .

The oldest main family names associated with the village Duba and the approximate dates when each of these Duba families is first mentioned in the archives are as follows

When examining the Cibilich family genealogy and the Duba population changes and movements two things become apparent. Firstly, in the last 500 years there have been relatively few instances where males from other villages have settled and remained in Duba permanently. For this reason the family names of Duba have remained relatively constant for this period of time. Secondly, in the last 120 years there has been a massive migration of the population out of Duba.

By far the majority of Cibilich / Cibilic / Zibilich migrants left Duba for the USA particularly for LOUISIANA in and around NEW ORLEANS. The Cibilich name can be found in many other countries including Australia and New Zealand . In New Zealand the Cibilich / Cibilic families represent three main lines of descent .

According to Vlaho D.Cibilic and Stipo L. Cibilic the earliest mentioned Cibilich ancestors appear to be BILUN CIBILIC born in the late 15th century and his son ( or possibly nephew ) MATO CIBILIC born around 1500.

According to Nenad Vekaric the first Cibilic from Duba mentioned in the archives is NIKOLA CIBILIC who was a fisherman in 1504.

There is a strong possibility that this Nikola Cibilic is the same Bilun Cibilic mentioned by Vlaho D.Cibilic and Stipo L.Cibilic. According to Dr Tony Yelavich we can not be certain of this. They may have been father and son or brothers. He was probably born in OSKORUSNO where the Cibilic family first established itself when they migrated from GRUDA in Hercegovina in the late 14th or early 15th century.

The first report ( report # 1 ) on the Cibilich Family Tree web site uses a simple Ancestral format with myself in the starting position. It will eventually trace my ancestors backwards in direct lines as far back as Mato Cibilic .The second report ( report # 2 ) will use a descendant format . It will chart all known descendants of Mato Cibilic .

All this will take some time but I hope to expand it out to also include the genealogy of the Petrovich, Tomasovich, Murina, Jurisich, Bilich, Slabich and Zegura families . I also eventually hope to include a photo and video clip gallery.

I have adopted no particular policy with the use of the 'h' in the spelling of Cibilic / Cibilich / Zibilich other than using the English spelling form most commonly used at the time .

It should also be noted that prior to 1700 the names of wives and daughters were not recorded at all . After this, until relatively recent times only their first names were documented .

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The ancestry report uses 'Ahnentafel' numbering. This means that a person's parent's numbers will be twice as large as the person's number. So if someone's number is 15, her father will be number 30, and mother will be 31. Her child will be number 7.
