| Our family tree beginning with Ggrandfather Rev. Dr. Hugh Davis Murphy from Belfast. We are looking for other Murphy relatives from Gerald Murphy and from Hugh Davis' brother who emigrated to Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. James Caleb Murphy (b.1853 d.24/06/1931) was an executor of Hugh Davis' will and is recorded as his brother. Robert Murphy is recorded in the Conor Diocesan Directory of the Church of Ireland as the father of Hugh Davis. As family anecdotes have our roots based in Bushmills, it is possible that Robert and Jane Howard Murphy of Ballyloughmore in the parish of Billy are our paternal ancestors. A clue to this assumption is that both are buried in the Howard family grave in the old cemetery at Billy and that Earnest's second name is Howard. It is an Ulster tradition that a son, often the second, carried the name of his mother's family as does Claude. It is not too unlikely that the third son would take his grandmother's family name. Likewise, Hugh Davis may be carrying his paternal grandmother's family name. |
