Why Annoying Insects Are Annoying
Article contributed by Big Al

Annoying insects can be annoying for a number of reasons. The first of course is the fact that they draw your eye away from whatever it is that you are doing. The second is that they often produce a distracting and highly irritating buzzing sound. Thirdly, and most importantly, many insects can bite and sting which can cause not only itching but sometimes pain and occasionally result in hospitalisation, and even death. We begin by briefly defining the concept of "annoying insect" before going on to consider these three causes of annoyance in turn.
Annoying insects are noisy, ugly, and dangerous. Thus butterflies are not at all annoying insects while mosquitoes and hornets are very annoying insects.
The human eye is attracted to movement. Insects move. The result is that people are often distracted from what they are doing by the insect in question. It is not infrequent that people enjoying a meal in the great outdoors and having an engaging conversation with their friends will find their line of though broken and their enjoyment of the meal spoilt by the presence of insects flying around them. The likelihood of an insect doing you any harm by landing on your food is quite small but the knowledge that an insect has landed on your food is most irksome. Thus a great deal of effort is often expended in shooing insects away from your meal. It is the fact that you can see them that necessitates this activity as "what the mind does not know the stomach does not worry about".
The human ear always reports sounds to the brain and hence the constant buzzing of an insect is also often a great distraction. It is not necessarily any kind of fear of the insect or of what it might do but rather it is simply the presence of this sound pulling the attention of the person in question away from their chosen activity.
Finally and perhaps most significantly some insects have the ability to do serious harm to humans. For example, bees, wasps, and hornets have stings which can sometimes be lethal. Many people have allergic reactions to these stings and if the sting is on the person's throat the swelling which results can impede breathing and cause suffocation. Other insects such as mosquitoes can carry serious diseases like malaria which they can pass on when they bite and which can again be fatal. There are a limited number of mainly exotic insects which carry their own poisons and although they tend not to be lethal to humans they can cause severe symptoms.
As some insects can cause serious harm some people fear them and this fear can only serve to exacerbate the first two points we made. The insect can not only be a distraction but a cause of anxiety for its victim and hence must be seen as a threat to the pursuit of happiness.
In conclusion therefore, annoying insects are annoying because of their lack of hygiene, their ability to irritate people by their sound and even by their very presence, and their ability to cause people anxiety. Added to this is the fact that they sometimes attack people without provocation and that these attacks can cause severe illness and even death. I suggest that all annoying insects should be wiped out immediately.
