These include public, voluntary and private sector, positions in journalism, public relations, market research and advertising. According to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), employment in the Philippines rose by 3.2% or almost 1 million more in 2004. In addition, a report from Bureau of Local Employment Statistics showed that the number of employed persons increased by 3.20% or 976,000 employed persons. Total employment rate is also expected to increase for the year 2005. DOLE also adds that communication and media are among the fastest-growing areas of employment for the year 2005. Employment in the computer system, design and related services will also grow and add more new jobs in professional, scientific and technical services.

So what do these facts tell you? The Macapagal-Arroyo administration is promising to continue economic reforms to help the Philippines compete with the global market. Employment growth will be driven by strong reliance of business/companies in information technology; thus mass communication students will definitely have its place in the growing complexity of business. Media communication is widespread and takes a diverse range of forms that would definitely generate jobs from media networks, telecommunication companies, print media, research and advertising companies.

But what basically is the reason behind the Philippines' struggle to match the pace of development in the global and industrialized countries particularly US and countries in the East Asia?

As Gramsci's Hegemony puts it, there is a cultural universe where the dominant ideology (western) is practiced and serves to shape and influence people's minds. Clearly, economic prospects for 2005 will depend on economic performance of international communities.

From these assumptions it can be concluded that students like you are the examples of elements or instruments that succumb to these dominant ideology.
