Jonby, a Burzyn-based nivik, underway in the Gulf of Ederwyn
No; there is no such thing as a standard nivik, nor am I making a case there should be. Each ship is built to order and it is very unlikely that any two niviks, even if of the same size and design, will be outfitted in just the same way. Additionally, crew manifests will differ, as will the conditions and terms of each seafarer's contract, and those will vary over time as crewmembers come and go. Each ship is truly unique. But before we can go on to develop some worthwhile generalizations about the cost of transport and its effect on economics and trade, we have to establish some relatively fixed assumptions from which to work. To that end, I've created a set of "standard" niviks to serve that purpose for me. They are described in a little more detail on the pages at the other end of the links below.
The examples of trade given for each ship illustrate the estimated transport costs for that vessel operating between the indicated ports. Note that these costs include such things as crew wages and provisions, prorated cost of repairs, pilotage fees, and so on, but do not include the costs of taxes and tariffs on the cargo.
