WELCOME You are always welcome to meet with the church of Christ in Surrey. Anyone may feel ill-at-ease in an unfamiliar setting. So let us tell you what to expect when you visit our congregation. BACKGROUND Before
we explain what our worship service is like, perhaps a brief
description of it may help you to understand us. We are a completely self-governing congregation. Our goal is to restore the New Testament church in our time. We seek to determine from the Bible what the church was like when it was established and to follow that pattern. We believe this is a worthy goal. We are here to worship God, according to His plan and to serve the spiritual and physical needs of the residents and surrounding areas. THE ATMOSPHERE We are a friendly church. Feel free to be yourself and visit with us before and after the worship. There are no reserved seats.--- You may sit anywhere you like. Every effort is made to make the worship service a spiritually meaningful experience. If you need assistance, please speak with one of our members. PRAYERS There will be several prayers offered during the worship service. If you have a special need or request, tell one of the members and we will be happy to pray for you. (Acts 2:42; 1 Thess 5:17, 25). SINGING You will find a songbook for your use in the rack on the back in the pew in front of you. One of the unique things about the churches of Christ is that the music is "a cappella". In other words, we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments. The practice has its roots in our focus on the Bible. We seek to worship according to the first century pattern. Since the New Testament leaves instrumental music out, we believe we must follow the New Testament pattern. We believe you will find the singing meaningful, with everyone invited to participate. (Eph. 5:18, 19; Col. 3:16). LORD'S SUPPER A plate containing unleavened bread will be passed to each person. Each baptized believer will break off a piece of the bread and eat it. Then the trays filled with small cups will be distributed. The cups contain grape juice, or "fruit of the vine". Each participant will drink the contents of one of the cups. If you choose not to participate, don't be embarrassed. Feel free to pass the plate or tray on to the next person. We are instructed to do this in remembrance of Jesus - His Life, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. God sent His Son Jesus as a free gift to us if we are willing to believe. (1 Cor. 10:16; 11:20-30; Acts 20:7). CONTRIBUTION As an independent church, we rely entirely on free will offerings. They are collected in contribution baskets. You are our guest, and are not expected to make a donation. Just pass the basket on to the person next to you. (1 Cor. 16:1, 2; 2 Cor. 9:7). ATTENDANCE CARDS You will be invited to complete an attendance card and place it in the contribution basket so that we may have a record of your visit. This will also enable you to make your needs and requests known to us. PREACHING The sermon itself is usually about 25-30 minutes long. We think you will find it Bible-centered and directed to our spiritual needs. You are invited to test the teaching by comparing it to the Bibles provided in the book racks. You will notice that the preacher wears no special garments to set him apart from the other believers. You may wonder how to address the preacher. Everyone will be more comfortable if you use the preacher's first name. (Acts 2:42; 1 Tim. 3:15). INVITATION At some services an invitation is extended at the end of the sermon. Those who wish to make a public response will walk to the front of the auditorium while the congregation stands and sings a hymn. Do not feel uncomfortable during this invitation. You will never be singled out in any way. WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU Nothing at all! You are welcome to participate. But do not feel obligated to do so. Just observe if that is your choice. We would like you to sign our visitor's book. This provides information we need to write or call and thank you for your visit. It also enables us to inform you of our future special events. If you have completed the Attendance card, that is sufficient. We would like a record of your visit but only if you feel comfortable about it. Feel free to decline these requests if you prefer. OUR MEMBERS What kind of people will you find in our midst? Folks just like yourself. We are blessed, in this church family, with members from all ages, stages and "walks of life" You will find us a diverse group of individuals, unified by a common love for the Lord and respect for His Word. We encourage you to visit and worship with us at any time. When you do, you will find a warm and friendly welcome.
