European Grayling (Thymallus thymallus)

Introduction

The european grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is a widespread and much appreciated flyfishing game in Scandinavia, where it mainly inhabits the shallows of the Baltic sea and lakes, rivers and creeks below an altitude of 700 metres. The grayling feeds mainly on different evertebrates, likes isopods, mayflies, stoneflies, caddis flies, Chironomidae species and freshwater shrimps. In some habitats, like in the Baltic sea, an increasing focus towards piscivore diet takes place at a comparably small body size. The largest specimens are to be stalked in the northern parts of Sweden. The swedish sportfishing record, 2.85 kgs (6 lbs, 4 oz) was caught in Harraure lake in the Pite river encatchment, Arjeplog community, Norrbotten county. Other places worth visiting are Stentrsket, Lycksele community, Vsterbotten county and the Tuowa lakes, Gllivare community, Norrbotten. In addition to get the opportunity of catching enormous graylings, the fisherman will enjoy the presence of largest remaining true pristine wilderness in Europe!
