Online Help

How long does my new registration take to complete?
Placing your order takes just a few minutes. However, processing your order takes anywhere from 12-48 hours.
What is a web address?
A web address is also called a domain name. A domain name is a component of a URL that identifies and locates an entity (such as a business or organization) on the Internet.

There are several types of domains:

  • Companies or commercial organizations use .com
  • Educational institutions use .edu
  • Government agencies use .gov
  • Military addresses use .mil
  • Gateways and other administrative hosts for network use .net
  • Private organizations use .org

Yahoo! Personal Address currently registers .com, .net, and .org domain names only.

What if the web address I want is already taken?
If the Web Address Search results show that the web address you want is already registered, this means that another individual or organization has already secured it and that it is no longer available. Simply enter another name you would like and hit "Search" once more.
How many web pages can I create?
There is no no limit on how many web pages you can build. With GeoCities Pro, you receive 25 megabytes of disk space. This is enough space to build hundreds of web pages. And if you find you need to expand your site in the future, adding extra space is only a few clicks away!
How is GeoCities Webmaster different from GeoCities Pro?
GeoCities Pro is our entry-level package -- it offers the basics you need to build your web site quickly. It's great for beginners.

GeoCities Webmaster is the more full-featured and expansive package. With GeoCities Webmaster, you get more disk space, more email addresses, more subdomains, as well as password protection, site search functionality, scripting capabilities, and professional SiteWizards.

To compare the two, see our comparison chart for details.

What does pending mean?
Ordering your domain takes just a few minutes, however, processing your order takes anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. If you requested a transfer of an existing domain, the domain administrator or technical contact must approve any changes before they take effect.

During this time, you can take advantage of many features of your GeoCities Pro account, such as increased storage space, no ads, and the enhanced File Manager.

Unfortunately, you will need to wait until your domain is fully processed before it can be used to access your site. Until that, time you can use our page-building tools or upload files and access them from the GeoCities address:

    http://www.geocities.com/yourYahoo!ID

Once your domain has been processed, you can begin using your domain name to access the site as well.

If your domain is still pending after 48 hours:
If you are transferring a domain you had registered prior to signing up for your premium GeoCities account, you may need to check with your registrar to make sure you are using the correct DNS information. For more information about this, review Why is my order pending?.

I received a domain renewal bill or solicitation from another company. Is this legitimate?

If you renew your Yahoo! domain through any other company you will be transferring your domain away from Yahoo!. We also want to remind you that transferring your domain away from Yahoo! does not automatically cancel your Yahoo! GeoCities service or alter your fees.

Assigning administrators for your domain
There are three classes of users: owners, administrators, and members.
  • Owners: An owner is the individual who purchased the domain. There can only be one owner of a domain at a time, and owners can never be removed. Owners can adjust domain information, create administrators, create new email addresses, delete email addresses, and adjust the email address quota for a domain.
  • Administrator: An administrator is promoted when either an owner or another administrator promotes them through the Administration Management tool. Administrators can promote other administrators, create new email addresses, and delete email address (excluding any email addresses the owner holds). Administrators may not adjust the quota or remove the owner of a domain. Choose your admins well! Administrators must have a existing email address at the domain that they wish to administrate.
  • Member: A member holds an email address. Members may only delete their own email address. Members have no other privileges.
Important: Once a user has been made an administrator of a domain, they can delete or initiate changes against any address within that domain. Only assign administor permissions to users that you trust. An administrator can't delete any email addresses that belong to the owner of the domain.
Account privacy and security
An owner or administrator may NOT:
  • Read another user's email. As long as Yahoo! remains the email provider for the domain, an owner or administrator may not read another member's email.
  • Change any account information or settings.
  • View the contents of a member's calendar, address book, briefcase, or any other Yahoo! service.
An owner or administrator of a domain can:
  • Create new email addresses and invite others to use them.
  • Initiate changes to an existing member's GeoCities Pro/Webmaster address. However, the current member of the email address must approve of all changes before they take effect.
  • Delete a member's GeoCities Pro/Webmaster address without the current member's approval. If the administrator deletes the GeoCities Pro/Webmaster address, all emails previously delivered to that address will remain in the member's account. The administrator can choose to give this email back to the original member.
Administrators and owners have the right to remove email addresses from other members. However, any email addresses that an owner or administrator deleted will be reserved for 90 days. During this time, all email sent to the address will be bounced back to the sender and the administrator or owner won't be able to re-create the email address. Yahoo! Mail does this to protect user privacy.

If you contact the administrator or owner and they say that they have accidentally deleted your GeoCities Pro/Webmaster address, they can still fix things. If the administrator or owner tries to create the email addresses again, they will be prompted to reactivate the email address. Reactivated email addresses can only go to the previous member (you). An invitation will be sent to the email address specified within the email creation form.
