Test of Your Sanity
JC sighed again as she still lay unmoving. It had been a little over a week, but nothing.
Is she awake yet? Heather asked, coming in for her daily visit.
No.
These doctors arent doing a damn thing! she complained. They cant even get her to wake up!
They said she was lucky to even be alive, JC said, so dont complain.
Im surprised you havent broken down and torn up this place yet.
Why is that? JC asked, continuing the conversation robotically.
Cuz she isnt awake JC! Heather said, waving her better arm. Sheesh.
Im madits justwhats the point of turning the place upside down? he asked, taking a sip of his Coke.
Wellwhatever. JC, her parents just called.
Whatd they say?
They said that they got a flight today. Man. There were so many booked flights this week, they couldnt get one sooner. Heather ran her hand through her hair.
Her parents? JC questioned, not so mechanically this time. Coming here?
Its their DAUGHTER isnt it? Heather asked, eyebrow raised.
Whatever.
Its ok JC. Theyll like you, Heather assured him, reading his mind.
Ive never met her parents, he mumbled. I dont even know how to act around them.
Just act like the sweetheart you are.
JC shook his head. Who is that? I dont even know who I am anymore.
***
STOP IT! Heather cried, pulling JC down in a chair. You are gonna wear the tiles down if you keep pacing!
I cant help it, he shot back. How would you feel if you were meeting Nicks parents?
She blinked. Ok. So I kinda get where youre comin from. But just sit still for a minute!
JC rolled his tired blue eyes. Whatever.
Im serious.
What if they dont like me?
They WILL like you, Heather said for the umpteenth time.
But-
Shut up, Heather said, plugging her ear. JustIll tell you what to do.
Really? JC said, calming down a bit.
Yeah.
What do I have to do?
Ok the first thing you gotta do is
***
Flight 876 has arrived. Repeat, flight 876 has arrived, the flight attendant announced over the PA.
Ugh. Im so gonna bomb this, JC groaned, his head plopping into his hands.
No youre not, Heather assured him. As long as you follow all the rules I told you about, you will have no problem.
JC just sighed and stood up, waiting for Jessies parents to emerge.
***
Nick looked at his watch again. How long does it take for her to go and pick someone up?
Ha. Maybe she and JC ran off together and plan to marry, Brian said halfheartedly.
Nick shot him a death glare. AJ? Believable. But not JC. Nuh uh.
Brian rolled his eyes. I didnt mean it you baby.
She was on the brink of death just last week, Nick said quietly, but I wont let her get anywhere NEAR that close ever again.
***
Yeah nice meeting you, JC smiled, shaking Dons hand. He waved as Jessies parents left for their rental car, heading to the hospital.
Holy CRAP that was hard! JC said once they were out of earshot.
Just shut up and get into the car.
***
JC and Heather laughed as they got out of the car.
Man. I really did that? JC asked, shaking his head.
It wasnt your guardian angel!
JC rolled his eyes and opened the door for her.
Thanks.
Yeah whatever, JC said, still pretending to be mad.
They entered the waiting room and immediately recognized the familiar curly fro of Justin. They walked over. Justin looked up.
Hey guys. I just found out something that you might wanna know
