^Beneath the Surface 5^

I think youd better stop, Lance said, watching her put a spoon into her mouth.

Now?

Yeah. Thats your 4th ice cream in 30 minutes, Lance laughed, watching her face change expressions. No normal girl would eat that many.

Are you saying Im not normal? she asked, being defensive jokingly.

Lance shook his head. No. Its justyoure different.

Thats a given.

No really. Theres one more thing I wanna do tonight.

Jessica looked up. Like what?

Something you dont wanna be stuffed for, was all he said.

She pursed her milky white lips for a moment. Ok. She sat up and pushed the bowl away.

Lance sighed. Hey mom?

Diane came into the room. Yes sweetie?

Were ready to leave.

Oh, so soon?

Its been an hour and a half mom, Lance said.

Oh thats too bad. She smiled at Jessica. I hope you come back soon.

I probably will Mrs. Bass.

Please. Call me Diane. Dont make me feel older than I actually am, she smiled.

Jessica laughed. Ok. Diane.

Lance stood up. Cmon Jessica. Were gonna be late.

Number one: call me Jessie. Number two: where on earth are we going?

Dont worry about that. Now hurry up.

Jessica rolled her eyes. How you get him to tell you anything, I do not understand.

Diane laughed. Dont worry dear. Youll like it. Trust me.

Ill take your word for it.

Cmon.

*-*-*

God Lance your mom is so cool, Jessica commented, getting into the car.

Happy you think so.

So where are we going? she asked. Then she glanced at the clock. Its already 9.

Dont worry about it, Lance repeated.

Jessica sighed. How does your mother do this?

She doesnt. Thats the trick.

Jessica rolled her eyes.

*-*-*

Whoa.

Steady Jess. Steady, Lance laughed, holding her upright.

She blinked, waiting for the world stopped slanting. Jessica took a step, and she almost fell over. Lance lunged forward and caught her. He put an arm around her waist to help her keep her balance.

Thanks.

Youre welcome.

What ride now? she laughed.

I think thats enough for you, Lance said.

But-

Cmon Jessie. Weve been here for over 2 hours and a half. Were gonna be kicked out soon if not banned.

Jessica laughed. So what if we knocked down the house of mirrors? They can fix it.

Lance shook his head. Cmon. Theyre gonna close soon.

But we havent been on that roller coaster, she whined, pointing in one direction.

And you havent barfed on that one either.

Jessica tried to scowl, but she ended up laughing. Ok so I had a little too much ice cream. So what?

Arent your parents expecting you home? Lance asked, walking to the exit.

I dont know. They could be out, she shrugged, her vision clearing.

Out where at 11:45? Lance asked quizzically. No normal parents went out at 11.

She shrugged again, putting her arm around Lance.

Lance smiled, but kept walking. Cmon. Were going home.
