Keep Moving Forward

I had a bellyboard constructed from plywood. It had twin fins and turned down rails in the rear. It could hold an edge on a vertical wave face as I shot across the distance of the coral head the wave broke over. I had one photo, a Polaroid, of that board. It was green. Mike Malone and I ended up at a Captain's Mast for surfing that spot in that little bay after midnight one moonlit sultry Chu Lai night. Lost the only photo I had of that board. Damn.

Chu Lai, 1968-69
BAY AT CHU LAI NEAR NSAD - PHOTO BY TERRY JELCICK
Just as bunch of photos taken by Terry Jelcick.

For two years Jelcick was stationed at Rosemary Point, just a stone's throw from the ocean.

I don't remember names any more, let alone how to spell them. Movies we showed in the motorpool warehouse; 8mm skin flicks we rented from the Koreans for 45 bucks for three days. At a buck or two a head we'd pack the place with locals, Americal, Marines, Navy...Chu Lai.

Names like: "Junk base" and "Sand ramp", words that pop in and out of my mind from time to time. Before NSAD CHU LAI there was the destroyer, USS Morton DD-948.

From bootcamp in the summer of 66, straight to the Morton, and on to the line off the DMZ.
Combat Ribbon
The Morton under fire off Cap Lay in 1967. Many of those times are forever forgotten. Others, faint, foggy visions.
Rear window
With the view from my room, such as it was, it was not hard to understand why I didn't want to leave Chu Lai when my tour was up.
