The Video Music Awards 2001

What to say, what to saaaaaaaaay...

To make it simple, yup, last year's was a bit more interesting to me I guess...more people who I was interested in watching perform performed. However, the funny moments in this completely dwarfed last year's in terms of both hilarity and tact. So without further ado here's mah rev of da show, yo. Word.

*NSYNC won a total of four awards: Best Group Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dance Video, and Viewer's Choice:).

Best Group: Well they are the best group, so I don't see why they wouldn't get best group ya know;)?

Best Pop: To quote Sujen, "Um, HELLO? Like, the video's like, POP, so like, hello, um, like, it's gotta win!?" I thought that was very eloquently worded(^_^).
I gotta comment on the two ladies who presented this award though...Nikka Costa and Sheryl something...could they be any less enthused!? I mean they were acting all cynical and snotty delivering those lines, it felt like they were just making fun of the fact that they had to present for this award, and ugh that made me lose a ton of respect for them. I doubt anyone held a gun to their heads and forced them to present for this, so wtf was their problem? Maybe it's just me...

Best Dance: I think there's a difference between the Best Choreography award(Which Fatboy Slim won)and the Best Dance award: like, Pop's a better dance song all around. When I hear it I just start boppin' da head and want to get up and dance or whatever, something that Weapon of Choice doesn't really accomplish. So I think that's the diff;).

Viewer's Choice: Let's get one thing straight here: I don't know about anyone else, but I sure as heck went to MTV.com and voted and voted and voted hour after hour after hour and day after day after day. So whether or not MTV is rigged or whether or not they didn't give us correct numbers during their commercials means very little to me; I felt that they, we earned this award. And I felt so happy that they did...it was a great moment for them and for the fans.
But on the other hand(There's always another hand...), I feel really bad that just because *NSYNC won, BSB lost, BSB fans got hurt. I know and I have personally seen the fact that they were passionate about this and voted a lot too, and just because someone won other people got hurt. I wish it didn't have to be like that, I mean I don't wish that *NSYNC didn't win the award or anything obviously, but still. I kinda blame MTV, kinda blame the fans themselves.
On the other OTHER hand, check out those two fans:D! They were really cool and appreciative and natural, but it was still obvious that they idolized *NSYNC, the epitome what fans should be like.

The Show

Jamie Foxx: Aaaah, what to say, what to saaaay.

Well let's start with the fact that the opera intro was one of the FUNNIEST thing I've seen on TV, let alone the VMAs, in a long time. I honestly laughed and rolled at it, I honestly thought it was classic entertainment. I mean it's not often on live television you get people screaming/singing "WHITE HOE!!" and "BiiiaaaaAAAAAAATCH!!!" at each other to the lyrics of popular songs:).

But after that...eh.

Let me inform y'all of something I know. I know that around a week prior to this performance, Jamie had an interview about him on yahoo.com in which he specifically said that he wasn't going to make fun or rag on anyone this year, because people don't like it and it is their night. He said that he's mostly gonna be making fun of himself. He specifically said so, in fair detail.

Well wtf happened to that? Instead we were treated to the same Chris Rock insult imitation crap that worn out its welcome before the Wayans even came on last year. Some of it was funny, I'll grant...some. First of all no one got the Clinton joke or the mayor joke, then it devolved back into making fun of artists such as AJ and MJ and Mariah. And it's not even like it's some comedian stage show, they were only RIGHT THERE trying to enjoy the show, only to be made directly uncomfortable.

I know it's easy to make a bigger deal out of these things than they really warrant, but I don't think I'm doing that. I think what he did was extremely tactless. And at this point he hasn't even pulled out the bottle of "Apple Cider" in the BSB's faces yet, and by their reactions on TRL the next day I don't think it was the highlight of their night. I heard that Brian later ran backstage and angrily took the bottle from Jamie, and I have to say way to go.

So my point...Jamie had so much potential to be the greatest host in past years, and blew it.

I mean I've seen some of Jamie's other comedy work and he's really good! But you know:x.

Viewer's Choice Skits

Will Ferrell's climb: (O_O). That's all I have to say about that, just...(O_O). And also (^_^). I wonder how O-Town feels about this since they were right there:p...

Julia Stiles and Chris Kattan's Dance: What I personally think were one of the best moments of the night:D! I luff it when people don't take themselves seriously to the point where they can be monkeyfools like this, and it was really funny.

Daphne Aguilera: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lol...I normally don't think Andy Dick is all that funny, but this was pretty good, especially when he started to smack that guy around and then started to climb over people to get to Christina...I wish they didn't cut to commercial! On another note, Christina looks much healthier than she did last year...weight does a body good;).

Insult Comic Dog: "Jaaaaaayy-Looooooooooooooowww!! Please?? Can I SNEEEF YOOOUR BUUUTTTT????" Rotf...

The Performances(the ones I wanna comment on anyway:P)

JLo and Ja Rule: I don't really like the song, it's a bit "Eh, so what?" to me. But I really liked this performance. Filled with sweet coolness. And no matter what happens, we will always know that Jennifer Lopez doing the salsa in high heels is a good thing. Yes. Very good.

Alicia Keys: It can be about the glitz, the glamour, the hype...but in the end pure, raw talent stole the night.
Yes, this was my favorite performance of the night. Okay, do I like it more than *NSYNC's? No, not particularly. Do I think she did a better job at a performance than *NSYNC? No...
It's just that...I mean, just look at this! This was passionate. It was raw, raw passion and talent. It brings out the same type of emotions as *NSYNC did during their raw Grammy performance early this year. It's something like...reverence. It just does the song and herself so much justice; it was confident and energetic and it strived to share that confidence and energy and talent with all of us, something that a performance should do. Nothing about shocking us with something controversial or untactful, just...astonishing everyone with just how freakin' good you are. Starting out with those familar classic piano lines...The song was perfect as was the performance, the piano, everything. Up to this point I have only used the term "flawless" on this site to describe things that *NSYNC have provided, and mostly sparingly...in this case I have to award it to Alicia as well.

*NSYNC: Oh wow. Really...how do I talk about this? You know those seemingly simple emotions that you can't seem to put into words? Those would just about describe how I feel about this performance.

Let's start with the basics. Some people didn't like what they did with this particularly because they didn't really change a lot of the song nor its choreography. And they have every right to feel that way, of course. I myself didn't mind, not in the least. I mean...I like the song. Love it. It would have been cool if they remixed, but it's no big deal. They did redo some of the beats and most of the dancing actually. They didn't change the dance bridge because...well, everyone knows that part of the song and luffs it:)!

Also, I think people are comparing it a bit too much to last year's performance...I mean yes, I liked last year's remix/medley of all their hit songs too. Who wouldn't? I mean what could possibly top that? That was...huge, fantastic performance, upped their ante tenfold. Which is exactly why the two shouldn't be compared, you know? This performance was awesome. Last year's was awesome. They shouldn't have to try to outdo every single one, you know? Because that'd be 1)impossible and 2)taking away from the fun and excitement of just watching a great show.

And of course...Michael. Ah yes...Michael Michael Michael. Michael. Michael Michael.

I can't remember if I've ever talked about MJ on this site before, so just a brief moment to say how I feel about him: I do like him. I think he cool. He did a lot of songs that I like, and he's indisputably talented. Plus he sang that Free Willy song, major plus points for that;). But do I think Jacko is wacko? Yes. Jacko is really wacko. I mean, MJ is cool, MJ rocks, and MJ is the King...but MJ is scary. Oh yes. He scary like one of those ID4 aliens. I scared he gonn' whip out those scary tentacles and fire some green alien ray to destroy the Earth or something. MJ cool. MJ also scary. And weird.

But enough of that...thanks to my rather annoying tendency to find out *NSYNC-related material before it happens and my other annoying tendency to spoil myself more often than not, I actually knew that MJ was gonna be performing with them before it happened. But still...it didn't take away that feeling of excitement and basic "WOW" when the etch-a-sketch began to paint his image. I mean...that moment was just electric. It's like you felt the vibes of astonishment and delight from the audience themselves, from everyone that was in the room.

And that's another thing I liked about this performance(not just the MJ part, all of it), how the audience seemed to be so into it. Waving their hands and bopping and dancing along. And when MJ got out, you could literally see how wild and crazy the audience got, and how into it they were, and how excitedly they reacted. It was just fun to watch the whole audience-performer interaction, well, in action.

Also...pride. I mean come on, I'm an *NSYNC fan, I gotta have felt pride at the men for this. This is MJ. Honoring them with an appearance like this, telling everyone who watched this and everyone who didn't that "Hey. These guys are cool. These guys are something. These guys got MJ. They cool. Don't know how they did it but...whoa." It's a big thing. It was a great moment for them. It's kind of a superficial sentiment I guess...that just because you get to work with someone, you're somehow better...of course that's not true, *NSYNC were great before they got MJ to do this and they'd be great even if they didn't, but it's like a symbol, a showcase of their greatness in a twisted way. In our highly convoluted and materialistic way of being, the fact that MJ was at a certain status and wanted to share that status with *NSYNC...it's a big thing. A proud thing.

And I ain't gonna hold it against them, not in this lifetime;).

So props to them. For their own amazing and fun-to-watch performance of Pop and their elevation in "status" accomplished this night.

I do have to say though...camera angles = MAJORLY SUCKED. All those switches and bad angles and hardly focused on the right people...and you'd think that they'd fix it for the encore presentation that MTV always does, but nooooooooooo. Oh well.

Britney: Okay, let's not play games with this or make excuses.

WHO DID SHE THINK SHE WAS KIDDING? Is this like...some sort of insult to our intelligence and sense of dignity? Were we not supposed to know

There wasn't even that much dancing. Compared to most of her other upbeat songs, this is really not that much dancing. And she spent half the song walking around with a snake. Okay, let's not play games with this.

Does anyone else hear that flushing sound? Oh yes, it's the sound of a whole lot of respect for Brit flowing down the toilet. Oh, not all of it, mind you, just...a whole lot.

If I sound just a bit uncharacteristically disappointed in her...it's probably because I am. By now...we're mostly used to her lipsynching. We are. It's not some huge mind-blowing Apocalyptic event.

But it's sad. And disappointing. And obvious. And completely could have been avoided.

There wasn't even that much dancing.

And you know...if it wasn't for the fact that she basically just played her entire album demo over a loudspeaker and "danced" to it, it would have been a great performance. Really. I loved the costumes, I liked the idea of the jungle theme. It was creative and fun. Despite being a quasi-treehugger, I have no huge qualms about using the snake or that tiger.

Maybe it was due to the fact that I was just exposed to two mind-blowing performances from *NSYNC and Alicia. I know I shouldn't compare. But when you've just sat through two incredible displays of talent like that, and then you're exposed to...this...it just digs at you.

You know...I kinda blame Wade. I hope I'm not just picking on him because I wasn't particularly entralled by him in the first place, but this is just a bit of how I feel. He's the choreographer...but he's also their friend and colleague. And a fellow musician to boot. In that sense I guess Justin has to take a bit of the rap too, since he's obviously close to her in that sense and a talented and serious musician as well. And he had to have known, it's impossible not to have known.
But I mean...Wade in particular...he's the one who comes up with these concepts. When I watched Britney's Diary just a few days before this aired and they were rehearsing for just this performance, he was all..."Oh it's gonna be so cool, you're never gonna expect this, yada yada yada, it's gonna be da wammo..." and he's all rehearsing the moves with her and stuff...did her actual VOICE just not come across theirs schedules or something?? I mean is the actual singing part of the song just not taken into consideration when they're brainstorming and preparing? I'm really curious. Because at this point it just seems like the singing is just intentionally left out of consideration and preparation and all that. Really...is it a conscious decision between the two of them?

Despite how much blame I want to rag on Wade...the real fault just...ultimately falls back to Brit. It just feels so dishonest. Did she actually expect people not to notice? Was she actually just trying to skim through? Because...it doesn't work that way. The next day when MTV did a story on their own show, they even said straight-out that she lipped. It wasn't a joke or anything, it was a clear declaration of fact.

Sad:(.

So my thoughts on the thing...it's a fun watch of course, and in any case it didn't really disappoint all that much. I'll be looking forward to next year's, but then again the chances of *NSYNC performing again(fourth time in a row? Even MTV has their limits...unfortunately;))aren't very high, so we'll see.
