The 2001 Grammys!
"For every scaled-down interlude that allowed viewers to focus on an actual musical performance, such as 'N Sync's tight, scaled-down appearance, there was an overblown spectacle that would make a Vegas choreographer blush." -David Sprague, Reuters
"I never considered myself an 'NSYNC fan until I saw them perform on the Grammys. I was expecting the usual jumping around and sweating while teenage girls screamed, but this was beautiful. They really do have talent. I can't believe it took so long for me to notice that." -Linda, 43 San Francisco, CA, MTV.com
Well, I know that it's not actually called the 2001 Grammys, but I'm too lazy to actually remember the real number:).
Before I saw anything else, let me just point out that *NSYNC was nominated for three awards. They got none. Yeah, yeah, I know how much of an honor it is to be nominated for three awards. I know. It's major. But it felt like courtesy nominations. Honestly it did. With the way the show panned out...I mean...It felt like they were there to lose, no questions.
I have several complaints about that. Whether you accept it or not, the Grammys are very biased against newer acts. This is not assumption, this is fact. To me it's like you have to have been around for a while to win anything, and that's not fairness. That's not about the music. You don't have to have been around to have good music, you know? Being around for a long time does not correlate with having talent. I have nothing against Steely Dan or whoever, but come now. They won for everything, and everyone knew they were going to. In the year of pop, some older act who even older people have never heard of got undisputed claim to the awards. Everyone knew going in who was gonna take it, and that's not fairness, that's not judge of talent nor music. That's bending down to kiss the feet of legends and "respected" acts. Someone told me the Beetles didn't win anything until they broke up, and to me that's ridiculous, you know? The fact that they aged didn't change the fact that they were great when they were together, only difference was that they became a legend, so had to be "honored."
I'm not too upset, despite my words. As I said, I knew from the start that the chances were highly, highly against *NSYNC(Which again says a lot...). So I'm not upset. I'm still kinda disappointed, though. Everyone was kinda hoping that the Grammys this year might pan out a little more fairly, but hey...the guys who won kinda deserved it, I guess.
Anyway! On with the stuff.
Jon Stewart was hilarious! I didn't expect him to be, but he was, in a glib kind of way.
As usual with me, the performances were the best part of the show(Actually, the whole show was kind of a dud...). Let me just go over some of them(There were 14 in all)
*Madonna: Hey, I kinda liked this...kinda. I liked the flashing thing in the back where it showed all her previous incarnations. My brother watched this with me and he thought she was so freakin' muscular it wasn't even funny. But I don't know about the performance aspect of it...she danced a bit, got the crowd worked, but didn't actually do too much. It was cool, but not for me.
*Christina Aguilera: I was afraid she was gonna die on us suddenly, that basketball thing is so freakin' dangerous...:p.
I don't know Spanish that well...er, at all, but I don't know just how well she with the Spanishing...it sounded a bit too much like Spanglish, I thought. I mean as compared to the Latin Grammy performance it wasn't...It distracted me just a bit from the vocal performance, but not too much. It was okay...not her best. My mom watched this with me and she kept distracting me by mentioning how skinny Christina was. I think she was comparing her with Britney(Mom has serious pop music issues:)). I still kinda liked it though, just not as much as, say, her Latin Grammy performance.
*Moby, Jill Scott, and Alien Dudes...oh fine Blue Man Group: Have you ever had one of those things that you liked so much, but so scared you at the same time? Like those raptors from Jurassic Park, as a kid you thought they were so cool but would still have nightmares about them? Does anyone know what I'm...nevermind. Anyway, on my *NSYNC Las Vegas trip Blue Man was in town at the same time, and I could have gone and seen them...but I didn't. Just wanted to mention that for no apparent reason at all:).
*Faith Hill: Uh...well she's Faith Hill. She's pretty good. Um...I'm not into her, though I feel a lot of spirit in her songs.
*Take Six and Nina something-or-other: I really like this kind of doo-whop/jazz music, so I really liked this. These guys were amazing harmonizers, and I got so into it, it's got so much smoooooooothness that I like. Teehee. Teehee. And also, as a bonus, teehee. Well actually it dragged on just a bit but I didn't mind.
*Paul Simon: Okay, I didn't recognize him(I didn't catch Jon introducing him). Until about halfway through the song I was all, "Who's that guy with the guitar...?" Then suddenly it was like, "OH! RIGHT! Oops." Olivia's gonna shoot me, I know she is:)...
*Destiny's Child: I liked their intro and their ending...that was really interesting and fun. But the in-between parts...huh. She started getting all aggressive during the song like "SAY MY NAME, B!*CH!!!" and I was all, "Gee, warrior princess much:)?" Okay, you got to note that this went right after the *NSYNC performance(See below), and I thought they all looked good, but...I wasn't incredibly impressed. To no fault of theirs, of course, their just doing their thing. I liked what they did, but thought they could have done what they did better, you know? Their costumes were cool, I'm surprised very few noticed just how revealing it was.
*Eminem featuring Elton John*: Well, he rocked. I guess I'm surprised. YadayadayadaBrian'sahypocrite I know:). But it wasn't...I mean, it was so blown up...everyone's just talking about it and it just got annoying. He's performing. Big whoop. He did a great job. The controversy was just...yeah...It's not like I didn't expect or want GLAAD to do that protest thing, they had every right to, but it was blown so, so out of proportion. And they had that Greene guy getting all defensive about it; While I'm basically agreeing with what he said, I thought it was the wrong kind of moment for that, you know? Like he was desperate for people to not "misunderstand" him or something. Ah well...and Em got awards. That, I do think is kinda messed up...but whatever.
*NSYNC: O. M. F. G.
Can we say "chill bumps?" Yes, that's good. Say it with me, chiiiiiiill buuuuuuuuumps. If there was one reason to watch the Grammys, this was it for me. I was shivering all through the song and for some time afterwards. How can I not? When the altered harmony lines and the a cappella interlude(MY GOD I LOVE THIS PART)came my mouth hung open and stayed open. Praise be, glory be to the harmony gods that are *NSYNC. Did I mention I was moved? Oh dear lord. Rewind, rewind, rewind...I'm listening to it right now. Okay, Napster can't be all that bad if it'll give me access to awesome stuff like this. It's just...talent personified. Beauty. Dang *NSYNC is like a drug to me...and boy am I high...
You know what? I'm so proud of them that they could put something like this on and hold their own against the supposed "elite" that the Grammys picked. I absolutely felt that they were just thrown in to perform out of pity or to draw in viewers, but they totally shoded* the show. It's like they're saying, "You know what...we're here, we're awesome, and we're pure talent whether or not you're going to acknowledge it. So there. Yeah, that's right you old farts, go on and kick yourselves in the *** now that you realized how stupid you are for crapping us out! Yeah! Word, dawg!"
Nah I'm not bitter...whatever gave you that impression? *Innocent eyes*
It'd be so cool if they actually recorded a version of this TIPY. It'd be so insane. I do have to note that at the start when Justin was singing, you could hear the technician people or something...dang...
*shoded = beat
