Pop Psychology Part 1: Color-codin'

Do you guys know about color codes?

Probably not, eh? I don't think the exact term is color-code anyway; It was something I made up 'cause I didn't know what the real term is. I will refer to whatevertherealtermis as color-codes, anyway, 'cause it's just easier for all of us. 'K:)?

Ever since the dawn of humanity, every color has "stood" for something. Looking at green is supposesd to calm you. Green stands for tranquility or silence or serenity or passiveness in general. Looking at orange or purple or other more "dissonant" colors don't. Darker colors apparently make us feel more uncomfortable, stressed, even aggressive.

As said, different color gives us a different feeling or represents a different attitude. Commericials, advertizers, actors, even musicians have discovered the power that these chromatic sciences has over us. Has *NSYNC secretly been messin' with your mind by their usage of "color-coding?" You be the judge.

Let's start out with the very, very basics. When you think of the individual guys of *NSYNC, what color, what "tone" do you attribute to them?

If you've read my *NSYNC parody, the "Digital Star Saga," you'll notice that I attributed a different color to each *NSYNCer depending on what they seem to represent or what they wear most.

Take Joey. When I think of him, his attributed color, it is very obviously red. It's the color he seems to wear and even dye his hair the most, even though recently it's a little tamer.

Red, also very obviously, is the color of love. Red stands for lust, desire, romance, passion in general. Now, doesn't that sound just like our Joey:)? With everyone calling him "da pimp" or having the most lovers, it's a wonder if he and his marketting crew doesn't intentionally dress him in red to give us that illusion...

In Chinese custom, red is also the color that represents joy, good luck, good fortune, happiness, health, charisma, general merrymaking and festivities and other happy things. It's a happy color. Doesn't that sound exactly like our Joey, too, or at least the image that he works on delivering to us? People have always described him as the jolly, joyful, happy-go-lucky, charismatic one, who always gets into accidents but comes out, fortunately, unscathed. Coincidence? Maybe.

Now for the nitty-gritty...black and white(No, not Justin and Lance, you guys are depraved!).

White, as you know, stands for purity. Purity, cleanliness, chastity, virginity. Brides wear white to get married. White is also the universal color for "goodness."

Now consider this:

These were all taken during the era of *NSYNC TransCon rule, I believe. The first is their CD cover...white in general. The second is them in one of their earlier concerts; It's how they started off those concerts. Wearing white. The third is most likely taken from their "God Must Have Spent" shoot, I'm not sure, but hey, guess what? White. To symbolize their cleanliness, chastity, virginity(X_X), goodness whatever. It was their good-boys image. Now, I'm not doubting that the guys are really nice people in reality, and certainly it only seems natural to use white for "God Must Have Spent..." what with its angelic messages(Which could be further explained by color-codes), but don't you think they could've used this color-coding intentionally to...amplify...the effects a bit?

You know what I'm gonna show you next, right?:)

Black is the universal color for evil, darkness. Bad black, bad. No, black people aren't bad, what kind of person do you think I am!? Don't take offense like that, you know what I'm talking about.

It has been proven that sports teams wearing black uniforms are more likely to be called on a foul. We associate black with aggression. With anger. Depression. Even sadness, to a degree. All deep, dark, edgy emotions.

And yet, black in the color-code universe is also known as the color of formality, classiness, elegance, maturity. It means refinery. Men generally wear black suits to marry their virginal(Yeah right)wives.

Now consider this:

No Strings Attached. Their newer album with the "edgier" sound, signifying *NSYNC's more mature and drastic outlook after their lawsuit. All black. Even their concert intro costumes are generally black. All allusions to edginess and bad@$$ness. Signs of a more mature, driven, higher-classed image. Boys 2 Men? Definitely.

Do I have your attention, yet?

I'm sure you all caught their rockin' performance at the 2000 VMAs, right? Well, yeah, that example is a little too obvious(White coats for the slow and nice love song, black for the upbeat ones with a darker tone...pretty blatant), so I'm not gonna embarrass myself by pretending to know these things better than other people:).

So what? Chris always seems to dress in darker colors too, doesn't make him seem more of an evil person. Or does it? He seems to be the least liked(Or at least other people think of him as the least liked)in comparison with Justin or JC, who're always seen in shades of blueishness, signs of stability and control.

On another note, yellow is a sign of warmth, friendship, amiability. Who would you associate this color with? I can't think of anyone in particular who wears that much yellow...Justin and Lance are blondes(Kinda), and I'd associate Lance more with yellow(Also with green, but that's my own little perversion), but I don't think Lance is that much more friendly than Justin(How do you judge friendliness, anyway?). 'Sides, not all blondes are friendly. But don't you think that, regardless of actual personality, you just generally treat blondes as more open and friendly people? No offense to brunettes or anything('Cause I'm one myself), but there was a reason for older directors to always use blonde girls as the damsel and brunette girls as the villain in those Noir movies. This isn't prejudice at work, this is visual allusions at work.

On an other other note(WARNING THE FOLLOWING SECTION is rated PG-13), pink is the color of sexuality. Yeah, red stands for lust, passion, and romance, but pink takes it further, going specifically into sex appeal, eroticism, and kinkiness(How should I know this, you ask? Uh...no comment). I mean we usually associate pink with little preschool girly stuff, but be careful; pink is a direct combo of red(Love) and white(Innocence)...not exactly safe ideas to mix. So if you're wondering why you would usually associate Britney Spears with pink but for some reason think of Jessica Simpson as having more white...you're associating right.

What do you think? Do you agree with my claims? Am I just way overthinking this for my own good? Do you think I need a swift kick in the abdomen area? Well, tell me! I'm always in a good mood for feedback.
