Progressive-Scan vs. Interlaced

So why should you buy progressive scan?  What is it?

Simple Definition:

Interlaced and Progressive Scan DVD players are capable of displaying 480 lines of horizontal resolution. However, progressive scan doubles the lines of resolution (480p) for a cleaner and brighter picture.  Additionally, the display device MUST be able to handle progressive scan output in order for 480p to work.

How?

An internal decoder (MPEG-2) built in to progressive scan DVD players splits the DVD disc's 480-line frame into two 240-line frames and works them back together in what's known as the 3:2 pulldown.

3:2 pulldown?

3:2 pulldown is more complicated than simple line doubling.  Cheaper progressive scan DVD players usually do not have 3:2 pulldown capability; they simply double the lines twice as fast as regular 480i (interlaced) signals.  3:2 pulldown produces the best picture.  Progressive scan is better explained in
hometheaterhifi.com's detailed explanation of true progressive scan technology.

Compatibilty:

Progressive scan players will not work correctly on standard TVs.  They only work on display devices with an internal line doubler such as HDTV-ready TVs, CRT, DLP, and LCD projectors. A progressive scan output/input looks like the familiar red, blue, and green Component Video found on most higher end TVs.  However, standard Component Video RCAs cannot handle the 480p high bandwidth.

Is Progressive Scan For You?

For those who do not plan on buying an HDTV or projector for a while, you may want to consider a high quality interlaced DVD player.  However, most progressive scan DVD players are better built, have faster video chips, and are cabable of switching between 480i and 480p.  So future-conscious and/or tasteful buyers will benefit from progressive scan DVD players.

The Future:

In regards to the last statement, interlaced DVD-players show signs of being phased out.  The
2001 DVD player lineup introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show was full of affordable, well-built progressive scan DVD players. Below are popular progressive-scan DVD players.
