| Hi Folks Julio here with your fishing update. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY TO ONE AND ALL. Look for increased boat traffic on area waters this next week. My best tip for fishing during this time is to get an early start, leave the water for recreational boats during the heat of the day, and once again get out for the evening bite. Most lakes are experiencing a mayfly hatch as once again water temps are on the rise. Don't get discouraged seeing mayflies. Sure, a lot of fish are gorging themselves on mayflies, but these same fish can be caught. I'm seeing heavy feeding on the surface during the low light times I mentioned. A small topwater popper, a tan twister tail or a beetle spin will catch bass, crappies and even walleyes. Mayflies hatch in mud bottom areas, so these are the places to concentrate on, in average depths of 3 to 5 foot of water. Musky action is still very good. With water temps going up, topwater baits are now added to my arsenal. Early and late we are throwing a combination of topper stoppers off the front of the boat and the back fishermen throw a slow topwater bait such as a Hawg Wobbler or Creeper. Cabbage weed beds are pretty much developed and now the tips of the cabbage are visible just above the surface. These are the holding areas for this mighty fish. We caught and released 4 muskies this past week on topwater baits. Bucktails accounted for 2 more. Hot lakes were Lake Mohawksin and Lake Nokomis. The mayfly hatch has not affected musky fishing at all, so this is a great time to concentrate some time towards this mean, green fighting machine. So, until next week, be safe, keep your hooks sharp and as always I'll see you on the water Julio Pro Staff Guide Chuck's Sport Shop Updated: 7/1/2004 |
