The Shadow: The Discovery

Charles Kirby

The orangish-red sun rose over the cityscape of Anadarko illuminating its streets and lighting the way home for its many night-owls. The sun soon came upon a small suburb like street within its skyscrapers and broke through Jakes window. He rolled his body to avoid the sub and looked to his alarm clock. He was going to be late for school if he slept any longer.

He closed his eyes again to moisture their dry cover and he saw his father coming up the stairs. Not knowing what the vision was, he still quickly acted upon it. Jake jumped out of the bed and ran out into the hall and into the bathroom and jumped into the shower. Seconds later, his dad knocked on the bathroom door, Jake, youd better hurry up or youll be late. You know how I feel about tardiness. Im leaving for work, Ill be home around the usual time. Yeah, the usual time, when he was already asleep.

Ok, is all he said.

After quickly rinsing himself off and getting all ready, which took an unusual short amount of time this morning, he headed out for the bus stop. He joined behind the group of awaiting kids at the bus stop. None of them saw or cared about him, and he was too shy to make them. This is mainly why he didnt have any friends or even acquaintances. Who knows how he became the photographer for the school paper, he doesnt even remember. Hes just been doing it forever, just turning in the photos at the end of the week every week.

When he got on the bus and sat down in the back seat all alone as usual, he began to think about the strange occurrences of the morning. How did he see his dad coming up the stairs? How had he gotten ready fast. He went through all the scientific thinking he could muster to come up with a solution, but only came up with unprecedented accidents.

In his first hour class, Science, he sorted through the thinking of the bus. The teacher was rambling on about some strange light last night and about the coming of aliens. He didnt pay her any attention. Suddenly, in the pit of his stomach, there was a churning and boiling. He grabbed his stomach and stood up trying to get out of the room. He ripped the door off its hinges. The whole class stared as someone suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Who was that?

Was he in our class?

Jake ran out of the room and the school. He ran at super speed down the street. The churning in his stomach overwhelmed him and he fell into an alley into the dark, cold ground and passed out.

Two men in black suits walked into an office, both with looks of concern and fear impaled upon their faces. The office was completely black accept for one light. It shone over two chairs sitting in front of a mahogany desk. You both may sit down, a deep voice said from the shadows.

Yes, sir, they did so, and they did it quickly and correctly. They sat a silent for a minute, fear burning through their veins.

Well, what is it you have to report to me. Do not worry if it is bad news. They were comforted by this and their teeth rose from their lips.

Sir, the production has fallen behind schedule. Frankford quit and he was one of the major workers. It will take a while to train or find someone to replace him. The voice was now angered and his fist pound on the table and showed its gigantic fist in the light.

WHY HAS HE QUIT? WHAT DID YOU DO WITH HIM? He shouted.

W-well, he said that he had a change of heart, sir.

A WHAT? MY MEN HAVE NO HEARTS TO CHANGE! HE WILL BE EXECUTED AT ONCE INCLUDING HIS SUPERVISOR FOR LETTING IT HAPPEN!

B-but, w-w-w-we were his-his super-v-visors.

REALLY? WELL THEN! His voice took on a demonic tone he leaned his face into the light, grinning as the door locked behind the two.
