Shadow: The Beginning

Charles Kirby

Jake Cannon is a young man. In fact, he is only a senior in high school. A young man with jet-black hair, deep blue eyes. What a shame it is no one ever saw him, not even his father. He shall forever be shadow, walking through life, nobody seeing him until its too late. It will always be like that.

Jake walked down the dark, lonely street all alone. His brown leather jacket and jeans flapped in the cold breeze. He had just finished taking photos of the Anadarko Art Museums new exhibit. The wind hit against his skin like someone had ran up and threw a glass of ice water onto his face. Suddenly, an old beggar man came out of an alley in a long weathered jacket. Come, come, I have a gift for you!

Trying to get along his way home, Jake just began to walk around the man, Uhh, sorry, sir, I really need to be getting along.

NO! You come with me! The old man grabbed Jakes arm and pulled him into the alley. The beggar threw off his jacket and rose to full his height. His long white beard fell onto what seemed to be dark blue armor, only it seemed like it was from another world. My name Halafax, a watcher of your world. A great time of evil is coming, and your world is in need of protection. I am not allowed to interfere, but I can help. I have been watching you with much interest Jake; you have a true heart and a strong mind. So I am giving you a gift, a great gift. Before Jake could even stammer anything out, the man opened his mouth and light began to flow form all the openings of his head. Then light came from his fingertips, and then a giant beam came from his chest and illuminated Jake as if he were a beacon for great ships coming ashore. Then, as suddenly as the light appeared, it went away.

Jake looked around the alley, the old man was gone. Trust your heart and mind to make the wisest decisions, for soon all of you shall be needed to save this world.

What the.. Jake shook his head and stared at his hands a moment. What just happened? He began running. He ran faster and faster until he could see his house. He never noticed how much faster he reached house than normal, much faster.

His father still wasnt home from work, he never was. Jake went up to his room and quickly fell asleep. Thoughts and dreams swirled in his head and mixed together until the events of the night were reasoned out for a nothing more than a dream.

A dark figure stood atop the building, hiding within the shadows. Two smaller men dressed in all black held a large high tech cannon aiming it at the city below. "If you two are ready, you may take fire."

"Yes, sir." The one pulled the trigger while the other aimed. There was a small black cat walking down the street, minding its own business. It's scruffy hair letting off a foul stench that reached much too far. Suddenly, a blast exploded behind it. The blast became bigger and bigger, chasing the cat down the street as if it were now the mouse. The cat jumped into an alley as the blast went a few feet beyond it and faded.

"I'll need to continue working on the aiming mechanism, it seems. Let us be gone before some poor soul should see us and die."

"Yes, sir."
