| The New England Cruiser Association (NECA) NECA is made up of power boat owners and anyone who has an interest in boating. NECA is part of a national organization, the North American Cruiser Asociation (NACA) with chapters throughout the United States and Canada. The organizations take part in Predicted LogContests, in each region, and prizes are awarded to the winners of each contest as well as a grand champion prize for an annual contest that has the local champions compete at a different locale each year for the North American Invitational (NAI) contest. Predicted Log contests are contests of skill, not a race. Each contestant is provided with a pre-determined course of between 14 to 30 miles, with four to six major check points noted, as well as many other points along the route. The contestant must then predict the exact time he will reach each of the Control Points; and the 'start time' he will be using. Boats can run at any speed that is comfortable since this is not a speed race, but a navigation contest to determine the one who is closest to his prediction. The predictions take into consideration tides, currents, boat 'rpm's' per knot and any other significant item to assist in reaching the goal of the smallest percentage of error for the contest. Observers are sent along with each boat to record the actual time, to the nearest second, that the boat reaches each of the Conrol Points. The contestant may not have any time keeping device, radio, or any other instrumentation available that would allow him to have knowledge of time during the contest. He can use the boat's compass and 'RPM' indicator. The observer records the time and this is provided to the scorekeeper at the completion of the contest, which is then compared to the original prediction, and the percentage of error is calculated for each leg of the run and for the total time. Individuals who have power boats, or would like to serve as observers are welcome to join in the competition, the camaraderie, and the social fellowship of like minded individuals. There are also social gatherings after each contest where awards are presented. A summer cruise of one to two weeks is on our agenda and all are welcome to join the fun. The membership fees are extremely affordable !! For additional information, or a membership application, please contact: Past Commodore Chuck Rubin at <[email protected]> or by phone at 508-394-9824. All are welcome !! Come on, get out on the water!! Check this site regularly, as a Schedule of Events will be added soon, and contest information and results will be posted at regular intervals . |
