Cooler Mash Tun
Fist off
let me say that I have no affiliation with
Zymico or Rubbermaid. I just use their products.
You can make either a 5 or 10 gallon mash tun. The 5 gallon mash
tun will
cost you about $80 and the 10 gallon will cost about $120. I
decided to
go with the 10 gallon since it is not that much difference in price and
will
allow you to do 10 gallon batches or big beers such as barleywines.
Ok, lets get started...here is the list of parts you will need:
10 gallon Rubbermaid cooler
Bazooka T Screen
Kewler Kitz Basic +
Kewler Adapter
Pipe Tape (this is the white tape plumbers use to seal pipe so they
don't
leak) Pick this up at a hardware store.
Pliers
Screw Driver
Ok, let’s get started...this should only take you about 10 minutes and
a pair
of pliers and a screw driver.
1. First thing you need to do is unscrew the original spigot from the
cooler. It is held on with a plastic washer inside the cooler.
2. Now take the bulkhead (thats the big metal bolt thing) and put a one
of the
washers in place in the inside of the cooler. Take the nut and
other
washer and tighten to the bulkhead on the outside of the cooler.
3. Connect the Bazooka T to the Kewler Adapter and tighten with a screw
driver.
4. Now tighten the Kewler Adapter to the bulkhead with the
pliers. You
want the Kewler Adapter to be pointing straight out from the bulkhead
and then
pointing downward at the Bazooka T.
5. Take the pipe tape and put on the thread and attach the open/close
valve by tighten on the outside of the cooler.
6. Thats it now fill the cooler with water and test for leaks.
Here are some photos of the different parts and the finished product.
