July 27, 2009 50 Year Class Reunion Hi Classmates, We want to thank all of you who came to our big "50 year celebration" held last weekend. We had a wonderful turnout with about 120 to 130 classmates at our Thursday night mixer and 145 at our dinner on Friday night. Everyone had a great time. Alot of socializing and catching up on old times. There were about 10 classmates who had never attended a reunion and after coming this time, wondered why they stayed away so long. The food was great and the music fantastic..Dave Remely plays the best "doo wop" music of all. It was great seeing so many people laughing and saying "Do you remember...." Looking at all the old pictures we had posted brought back so many of memories. Our 55 year reunion will be in 2014. We're hoping you plan on being there. No matter how much work goes into a reunion, when you see everyone having such a good time, it's all worth it. And as long as you still want the reunions, we'll keep doing them. Events you can plan for Saturday with your friends.
The BIG FIVE OH! Reunion is sneakin' up fast. We, on the committee, have struggled between cost containment (to encourage the best possible turn-out), and doing something special which can mean different things to each of our many classmates. With prices going through the roof, we have focused on trying to get the best bang-for-the-buck on our two main events. At the same time, we are trying to come up with some ideas by which YOU can help US make your 50th Reunion a special experience for YOU. We chose to shift the events to Thursday and Friday as our first cost savings and to avoid huge, up-front, contractual attendance guarantees and deposits typically required for Saturday-in-July reservations. As it turns out, there can be some other great benefits to our plans. For example, mid-week air travel rates and, for those who wish to make this an Extra Special Occasion, a free-time weekend to gather your 59 CHS Bear BFFs to plan, and do, something wild and crazy with your old gang (some ideas later). Obviously, the committee can't make the many reservations for you or your group, but we can help by providing some suggestions and information. Pittsburgh is a fantastic place with lots to do for groovy do-wopper Bears like you all. If you are able, perhaps plan your vacation around the reunion and make it a long weekend of fun! While we were disappointed with our last experience at the site of the reunion (it was under renovation), it is now a Crowne Plaza 5-Star facility. The committee is working hard to ensure no repeat of our disappointment. That aside, for those who don't like to drive in Pittsburgh, or those who just want to venture, the Crowne Plaza is only about 2 blocks from the T (modern trolley system) which serves the Pittsburgh and South Hills area (20-25 minute to downtown with underground stations accessing the key points downtown).
IMPORTANT: (I know this may bring a lump to your throat) MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR MEDICARE CARD WITH YOU!! It's your NO-HASSLE, FREE pass for the T, the Incline, and other Port Authority transportation if you choose to use it. SO, as reunion time gets closer, you may want to link up with your gang of BFF's(email, phone, snail mail, smoke signals) to make plans and reservations for your other special antics beyond Friday. SOME IDEAS (Take the T or drive) Hop on the T and get off at Station Square (the hub of many activities). There are shops, restaurants, dancing Waters-fountain, The Gateway Clipper Fleet (river cruises), Just Ducky Tours (WWII Amphibian tour of downtown streets plus a cruise in the river, an absolute must for any gang of whackos ) http://www.justduckytours.com/index.php , high-tech �SEGWAY� tours of downtown (max group of 10-15 at a time since it is follow the leader on these two wheeled contraptions, http://www.segwayinparadise.com/Tours.html ). Walk across the street and take the Incline to Mt. Washington for the unparalleled view of the Golden Triangle, the stadiums, the three rivers, plus, if you�re not still full from Friday, up-scale world class restaurants with an awesome view. And/or take the T into downtown for a wealth of Arts and Entertainment activities. Who knows what concerts will be in town, but there almost certainly be one for your taste on this special weekend if you wish. Also, for those who are interested, the Casino at the Meadows, just down the road (Rt 19) a piece, is in operation. NOTE: Currently the T does not connect to the North Shore (they are drilling under the river now) so you will need to drive, river shuttle, cab, or walk a bridge to get to Heinz Field, PNC Park (for their displays, maybe an in-town baseball game), Carnegie Science Center (with WWII Sub SS Requin), Andy Warhol Museum, Sesame Street, and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. THE BEST SOURCE FOR WHAT WILL BE GOING ON DURING OUR REUNION IS THE PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE at http://www.post-gazette.com/, especially the Sunday Arts and Entertainment (A&E) Section. The possibilities for added fun before or after the Thursday and Friday reunion events are limitless. Get your gang together, and GO BEARS! Let'em know you're BACK IN TOWN!!! A special thanks to everyone who attended our 2 day 45th Class reunion. Whether you just came Friday night or Saturday night or both, we sure had a great time and I hope all of you arrived safely back home. We had 114 people at the Friday night mixer and 130 people for the Saturday night dinner dance. Our committee worked hard and our efforts sure paid off with such a nice turnout. The food was great and also great music by DJ Dave Remley playing those fantastic Oldies. We are looking forward to seeing you at our 50th year reunion in 2009.
