A member of the Rastafarian religious creed, Marley was a hero of the black consciousness movement. Robert Nesta Marley was born in the parish of Saint Anne's. His father was a British military officer. Marley attended Stepney School. At fourteen, he left the rural parish and headed for Kingston. Marley spent his early years in Kingston learning about music and Rastafarianism. In 1964, he formed the music group, the Wailers, writing most of thier material. After a series of Jamaican hits in the sixties, the Wailers signed a contract with Island Records in 1972. They achieved thier first international success with the album, Catch A Fire. Marley's fiery stage performances and rousing lyrics won him futher acclaim with songs like I Shot The Sheriff, Exodus and Buffalo Soldier. Bob Marley sang about the injustices of colonialism and slavery. His lyrics carry the messages about the struggles of the oppressed.
