The Race: For the first time in 19 years a foreign car won the 500. Wilbur Shaw, driving a supercharged Maserati, took over the lead on lap 197 when Lou Meyer spun and crashed on the back stretch. It was Shaw’s second Indy win, and he would have his third and final victory the following year. Meyer retired from racing after his crash, and so ended the career of the first three-time winner in Speedway history. George Bailey’s qualification of the rear-engine Miller marked the first time a car with the engine in back ran at Indy.
