Personal Reflections

(Thank you Ellie aka Fishnut for sending this one)

One

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.

As we carried each other down the
stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.

As we lit candles of waiting and hope,
We became one generation.

As the firefighters and police officers
fought their way into the inferno,
We became one gender.

As we fell to our knees
in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.

As we whispered or shouted
words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.

As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.

As we mourned together the great loss,
We became one family.

As we cried tears of grief and loss,
We became one soul.

As we retell with pride of
the sacrifice of heroes,
We become one people.

We are:
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people

We are The Power of One.
We are United.
We are America.

Something important that I learned from that day.  For me it just reinforced the best lesson my mother ever taught me.  Here it is:  "Don't wait till tomorrow to tell someone you love them!  Tomorrow may never come & you will spend the rest of your life wishing you had taken just a couple of seconds to let them know just how much you do!"  My mom made a point of teaching me this at an early age cuz this is exactly what happened to her.  She loved her dad dearly but she came from a family that never spoke of their emotions even though they did love each other greatly.  Her father, who she adored. died suddenly when she was just in her early 20's & she spent the rest of her life wishing she had told him just how much she loved him.  So tell those you love that you do & tell them everyday!  My dad who I also adored more then life itself also died very suddenly & unexpectedly when I was only 26.  Thanks to my moms advice, I had made it a point to tell both of my parents EVERY night before bed that I loved them..  So thanks to my moms wonderful lesson, I never doubted that my dad knew just how much he meant to me!  I'm sure that there are many families who lost loved ones on September 11th that would give the world to have the chance to say this to the one they lost just one more time.  So if for no other reason, do it for them!! - Kit

THE LADY

I wonder what she thought
As she stood there, strong and tall.
She couldn't turn away,
She was forced to watch it all.

Did she long to offer comfort
As her country bled?
With her arm forever frozen
High above her head.

She could not shield her eyes
She could not hide her face
She just stared across the water
Keeping Freedom's place.

The smell of smoke and terror
Somehow reduced her size
So small within the harbor
But still we recognized...

How dignified and beautiful
On a day so many died
I wonder what she thought,
And I know she must have cried.

THE FAITH OF A NATION

A Nation that had no worrys
a Nation that showed no shame
suddenly lost its dignity
and was defeated by a plane.
Many peoples' lives were stolen
two twins fell to the ground
Police and firemen searching
not a survivor to be found.
Although words are not spoken
they are said through a tear
this Nation that stood proud and tall
was now living in fear.
The world is silently crying
as the pain is still quite raw
a man accussed of murder
has started a new world war.
But all he does is smile
because the power is in his hands
but he will not kill this nation
the people's faith will always stand.
So let us not be worried
although for a nation it seems the end
the countries will come together
this world we will defend.
