Destiny

_______

Luke, it is inevitable ... no let me try that again, said the actor in  the black outfit. Wait a minute, it doesn't matter how I say it,  somebody else is doing the voice anyway.

Yes, said George, but saying it correctly and with feeling will help  you when it comes to body language. It's not enough that you're a  tall guy, it has to look like you're saying it and meaning. Try  holding out your arm and making a fist.

Luke and Vader, take three.

Action.

Luke it is your ... no let me try again ... Luke it is inevitable. He  laughed.

Come on, said George, stop laughing, this is serious. It's a  serious moment.

The actor in black could not stop laughing. Can we change the  line? Inevitable just sounds like too funky a word. Nobody says  inevitable.

Okay, I'll think about changing it, let's everyone take a break. Kill  the lights on the blue screen, we don't want any bulbs blowing  before we begin shooting again.

Twenty minutes people, someone shouted.

George took a deep breath and turned his head so as to crack  his neck. The script person walked up to him. Mr. Lucas, you  have a visitor. It's Buckaroo Banzai.

Ah, Buckaroo! said George. How long have you been standing  there?

For a while, said Buckaroo. I've been enjoying what I've seen so  far.

Of course you'll have to keep this all a secret, said George,  anything you've seen and heard since you stepped through that  door.

Of course, said Buckaroo, I signed the agreement, didn't I?

I'm sorry, said George. I'm just overly tired and overly protective of  my work. Lately, I haven't achieved much progress because I  can't get my actor to stop laughing.

Levity is a good thing, George.

Sure it is, but not when it comes to my writing, replied George, it  makes me think my writing is stilted, stiff, and corny. And it is, I  know it is. But I hate to think of it as some kind of joke the critics  are going to harp on.

You're making the kind of film that will uplift people, George. You  films offer hope to a world that is in need of hope, desperately.

George, can I speak with you? asked Mark Hamill.

Sure, said George.

Hi, Buckaroo, said Hamill.

Hi.

Now, I'm looking up at him, and he says his line, and I'm  supposed to be afraid, but, I can't be afraid if he's telling me it's  inevitable. Can't you think of a better word than that?

But is IS inevitable, said George. Inevitablity is the idea Vader is  trying to get across.

I understand, but what about Luke, it's your calling?

-- Rawhide interrupted. Buckaroo, there's a call for you, it's  important.

Can it wait?

The President of the United States? No, it can't wait.

All conversation ceased. Everyone was listening.

Yes, Mr. President ... Uh huh. Uh huh ... Yes that sounds like the  doing of Hanoi Xan. He's the type to attempt something that evil  ... Uncertain ... I'll call you when I get back to the Institute. We'll  talk about this some more ... No, I don't believe it's an immediate  emergency. But we'll have to deal with it sooner or later ... Yes, I  think it's inevitable. Talk to you soon. He hung up the phone.

You see? People DO use the word inevitable.

Look, George, I know people use it, but in LIFE, it just sounds  way too corny on screen. I mean, people say I love you all the  time, but, on screen it's a cliche. Nobody buys it anymore  because it sounds phony.

This is all nothing but a matter of opinion. Look, I wrote it this  way, and you guys are gonna say it this way and that's all there is  to it. Now, please, don't give me such a big fight about this. It's  not that big a deal.

A loud angry voice suddenly cut through the air -- it was Vader  and he was on the phone, and he was yelling. You tell that good  for nothing that if he doesn't return my magazines that it will be  his destiny to meet my bloody fist!! Sorry, everyone, didn't mean  to shout like that. Personal problem. Actually, it's not a problem  at all. He went on to speak softly.

That's it, said George. Destiny! Luke, it is your destiny!

No, no, George, that's even worse, not destiny. Not in this film.  Don't do it!

It'll work. Trust me.

I can't win. I just can't win, said Hamill, walking away.

Everybody was in positon. Action. Luke, it is your destiny.  Laughter echoed through the studio.

I give up, said George.
