The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
from Chris McDonough

Guide Rating  -  ****

The Bottom Line

Gogol Ganguli is the American-born son of immigrant Bengali parents. He is named for the Russian author whose book saved his father's life. Names, and all the facets of naming a person, form a thread along which the author strings the first half of Gogol's life, as he copes with the clash of his Bengali and American identities

Pros:   A clear, direct, well-told story.
Cons: Too much architectural detail.

Guide Review - The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

You won't read this Pulitzer Prize winner so much as live it. If you don't know the "immigrant experience", this is your chance to experience it first-hand. If you're living that experience, I believe you will find validation and support in The Namesake. The story is straightforward and makes an entertaining, comfortable read - after which you'll be wiser than you were.
