Guide Review - The Falls by Joyce Carol Oates

Although much praise can be lavished on this novel, I can't lavish it - I took a strong dislike to the increasing unstable main character, Ariah Littrell. That being said, fans of Joyce Carol Oates will not be disappointed by this book. The characters are well drawn. The juxtaposition of Niagara Falls and Love Canal, both dangerous, is expertly done. This sprawling family saga surges in several directions as it illustrates many facets of self-destruction in people, in relationships, and in nature. Ultimately, the theme of self-destruction turns to redemption as Dirk Burnaby is vindicated.
