Legacy Project - Columbus High School
Christy Melton
Spring 2007
The legacy project that I have chosen to leave at Columbus High School is a pavestone sidewalk. The sidewalk was constructed directly across the street from the high school at the Lutheran church. The church had donated various items to the Columbus FFA Chapter and it was time to return the favor. The community of Columbus, TX is a very giving community that gives the FFA much support. I felt that the chapter should show their appreciation by building this sidewalk.
The walkway was approximately 120 feet long and 2 feet wide. It was constructed with concrete blocks forming a pattern the entire way. The class that I chose to help me with this project was my seventh period landscape design class. This class had the curriculum that fit with the project and it was a fairly small class. Once I had explained the directions and told the students my plan, they began helping me accomplish the task. The first thing we did was measure the area that would the sidewalk. We then used four stakes and sting to mark off the area. The students then began digging up the grass where the blocks would be placed and continued this for two days. The blocks were then laid the following day. A total of 240 blocks were used in the project. I believe that students really enjoyed this experience. Most of them had never made anything like this. I really enjoyed this legacy project and know that it will be used tremendously in the future. I hope that my legacy project will be an everlasting reminder of my commitment to agricultural science and the Columbus FFA Chapter. I have included pictures of my class and I working on the project.
