SCARY STORY

Chapter 1
The mug of hot chocolate sat on the table directly in front of Elyse.   Its sweet aroma floated up through the air lingering near her face. She slid the wet hiking boots from her feet, tucked her long sandy brown hair behind her ears and wrapped the blanket about her a little tighter. Elyse forced her half frozen fingers to open despite the pain. A skeleton key fell from her hand; it bounced on the table top and landed next to the cup. She avoided touching it, instead she closed her hands around the mug and used its warmth to ease the chill ache in her fingers.

Why hadnt they listened? What were they trying to prove? She shook the thoughts from her head. A tear escaped the corner of her eye and she wiped it away. Trembling she took a sip from the cup. The tingling in her toes and the stabbing pains in her hands faded as her mind took her back to what had happened earlier that day.

Elyse had tried to tell her friends the old mansion was haunted. Itd been in her family for well over a century. Most of her ancestors had lived in it at one time or another, until it became so old and worn there was no hope in ever rebuilding it.

Lately weird things seemed to happen there all the time. Sometimes the entire house lit up in the middle of the night. Pretty hard to do when the house had never been wired for electricity.

The doors and windows were always opening and closing.
Mysterious smoke rose from its chimneys. There were also voices and noises; sounds from the past slipping through the veils of time. She could hear music, laughter - and then there were those scary sounds. The very thought of them made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.

But no - they wouldnt let it go. As soon as they realized Elyse had the key to the front door, they wanted it. They begged for it!
