| If there was ever a perfect Disney character, it was Notre Dame's compassionate bell-ringer. After nearly 60 years of the animated feature business, Disney FINALLY realized that men don't have to be tall and dashing to be heroes! Quasimodo is just perfect. He is loyal. He is brave. He is compassionate. He is imaginative. He is everything else you could want. Tom Hulce gives Quasimodo a voice with the right balance of power and vunerability. And you can't help but get goosebumps when you hear him sing! The last note in "Out There" still gives me shivers even though I've seen the movie a million zillion times. And the way James Baxtar draws him is absolutly superb! His design is perfect. Ugly? No way! He's got beauty in his wonderful animation. How can you put so much emotion into a character's eyes by just using a pencil? I also like how they never forget to make his red hair move. Quasimodo has lived his whole life alone in the bell tower of Notre Dame, treated harshly by his guardian and taught that he is worthless. Some say that living a hard life makes you stronger. I don't know if that's true, but Quasimodo is definitly strong. He never had a friend, thus when he finally gets one he'll save her from the stake, and even be willing to accept the man she loves, even when the man she loves isn't him! He loves Esmeralda enough to let her go. How much more noble can you get?? From his loneliness emerges a wonderful creativity as he carves his own version of the city and befriends the little birds that visit. Just look at him when we first see him ringing the bells! One of Disney's most dramatic introductions! Quasimodo is my inspiriation. The world would be a better place if we were all like him. |
