| The Captain of the Guard with the blonde beard, and the film's other male hero. Phoebus is one of the few Disney characters who can strike the perfect balance between being funny and being serious, and he is definitely not just a stereotypical "knight in shining armor." In fact, his shining armor comes off mid-movie, and THAT'S when he gets the girl! He can crack a good joke in some pretty tight situations (like nearly being hit below-the belt by a candlestick), but it never takes away his dignity. Kevin Kline delivers his lines with just the right amount of energy, giving Phoebus a unique tone. Like Esmeralda, he sounds more mature than your average Disney hero, but he still has a youthful spunk in his voice (now if only the guy sang...). Russ Edmonds gives him a fresh design: the blonde hair is a good change from Disney's usual brown or black, and Phoebus is the first Disney hero to sport a BEARD!! He's animated well too. A subtle lifted eyebrow and slight sneer tells us that he is very uncomfortable working under Frollo. After many years away at war (so many that he can't even remember how to get around his hometown!), Phoebus is called back to Paris to serve as Captian of the Guard under Judge Frollo. Seems like a pretty nice change from the battlefield, but then he finds out that his new boss is, well...a little nuts. He discovers that his main assignment is to rid the city of the gypsies. He's not too sure about it, but a good soldier always follows orders. However, when he meets Esmeralda, she opens his eyes and shows him the way to freedom from soldierly obedience. Just look at him when he puts out the torch! How DID they animate that?? Phoebus is also one of the few Disney heroes to have a horse with personality! Achilles is well trained to "sit" and "heel" and then in HoND2, he starts making fun of his master. Phoebus is soooo underappreciated! He deserves more attention. |
