Where does the frame take place? Does it take place? Where does it begin? Where does it end? What is its internal limit? Its external limit? And its surface between the two limits? --- Jacques Derrida, The Truth in Painting, 63
this bold audio artefact features three meditations on 4'33"
the first, a conventional rendition, comprises silences sampled from live performances by a veritable smorgasbord of twentieth-century cultural innovators in numerous media (Whitehouse, Samuel Beckett, Motörhead, Chekhov, Zeni Geva, Clarice Lispector, Merzbow, Graciliano Ramos, Scanner, John Ashbery, Napalm Death, Maurice Blanchot and Anal Cunt, among others)
with the volume turned up to eleven, christöphilax provides a 46'21" re-imagining of the original track
and last but not least, Mark Automaton brings some welcome gravitas to the proceedings, weighing in with a characteristically challenging and controversial 23'39"
